The Lothians region

Just over the English border lies Dumfries and Galloway in the west and the Scottish Borders in the east. These two very distinctive areas have retained a totally rural and tranquil atmosphere where visitors can enjoy a wonderful holiday away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In fact here you'll find miles of beautiful untouched countryside and striking coastlines; a great place for outdoors holidays, fishing, walking, sailing and cycling. Coastal and beach strolls and small fishing harbours waiting to be explored. The capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh, is probably on most people's ‘must visit' list and with good reason. The city is renowned for its magnificent architecture and historical buildings, which include Edinburgh Castle and numerous museums and galleries. Today Edinburgh is a thriving modern city with world class shops and restaurants and lots of traditional atmospheric pubs.

East Linton

East Linton is ideal in its close proximity to Scotland's capital whilst retaining its rural charm and guests to The Cottage may enjoy a visit to Preston Mill, an old watermill on the outskirts of the city which has been working over 400 years. Further a field to Dunbar and North Berwick there is plenty to see and do with activities available at a range of different facilities. 20 miles to Edinburgh and the iconic Edinburgh Castle stands overlooking the city centre, well worth the walk up to see the walls close up and with events happening all year round it's got loads to offer. Throughout the city there's a mass of independent shops, bars and restaurants to explore with plenty of local produce on hand to give you a real taste of what Scotland has to offer. St Mary's Cathedral, built in the 19th century, stands as a particularly popular historic attraction and for those with a real eye for architecture is well worth a visit. For a days activity the Edinburgh Zoo is full of an array of different animals and promises to be an exciting outing for all ages.
