About this location
The County Durham region
Byre Cottage is situated in Weardale, North Pennines, near the border of Cumbria, Northumberland and County Durham, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The North Pennines is one of England's most special places - a stunning landscape of open heather moors and peatlands, attractive dales and hay meadows, tumbling upland rivers, wonderful woods, welcoming communities, intriguing imprints of a mining and industrial past, distinctive birds, animals and plants and much, much more.
Please visit http://www.northpennines.org.uk, download North Pennies Pocket Guide from there to get all the local information.
Daddry Shield is a picturesque moorland village next to Westgate. Westgate used to be Prince Bishop's hunting ground and it was here that the famous `Great Chases' were held. It is also the entrance to Slit Wood and West Rigg Geotrail, a 3 mile walk through a dramatic North Pennine dale in miniature. The yellow Mineral Valleys Walk signs will lead you on the numerous walking tracks around the local villages.
Stanhope, market town with heated open air swimming pool and Weardale Heritage Railway station 6 miles.
High Force, England's biggest waterfall 9 miles.
Hadrian's Wall, Penrith, Killhope Museum, Barnard Castle, Beamish Museum and Durham Cathedral, all within one hour's drive.

"Near perfection in a cottage - we loved it"
Fantastic support from Jenny & Yee for my husband's medical condition; accepting a delivery before our arrival. Awesome views in a fab location and the website is not misleading in any way. It ticked all our 'very particular' cottage rental boxes. VERY minor comments: the fridge is quite small (but the garage doubles as an excellent fridge extension this time of year!) and laying the fire is a balancing act. Fantastic, and if we return to the area we would rebook without looking further.

"A comfortable, peaceful cottage with fabulous views."
A very enjoyable stay at Byre Cottage. We were welcomed with chocolates and milk/tea/coffee and a personal note from the owners. The cottage is beautifully furnished with everything you could possible need and more! The owners Jenny and Yee have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable. There are beautiful views from every window and sheep as neighbours over the back - they do not disturb you as the cottage has double glazing!! The view from the kitchen was especially lovely and we had long breakfasts there and lots of coffee whilst we decided what to do for the day. There are some wonderful waterfall walks from the cottage so no need to drive if you don't want to. If you do take the car, there are some lovely villages and towns to visit, and all offer short easy walks into the countryside. All in all, a very enjoyable stay and we hope to return at some point in the future.
