The County Durham region
Northern England offers everything from world-class culture, vibrant nightlife, award winning dining and much more! Minutes away from coast and countryside you can go from relaxing at the coast to soaking up world-class; from getting back in-touch with nature at a woodland retreat to shopping 'till you drop at Europe's largest indoor shopping and leisure complex, we guarantee that 'boring' - that awful little word - will slip quietly from your vocabulary while you're far too busy to even notice.
It's rare to find anywhere so diverse that amazes visitors at every turn with its dialogue between ultra-modern and ancient, urban and rural, tradition and innovation and the world-class and well-known with all that is local, unique, unspoiled and full of character. World-class culture, vibrant nightlife, award-winning dining, inspiring heritage, fantastic shopping and acclaimed architecture are linked here, as nowhere else, by the famous Northern spirit which unites our unique region.
Durham City, home to the iconic Durham Cathedral and Castle World Heritage Site, sits at the heart of an extraordinary county where breathtaking countryside and dramatic coastline are dotted with cultural treasures.
Escape to the peace and tranquillity of the Durham Dales and North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to relax and unwind or get outdoors and active. Or experience the rugged beauty of High Force waterfall and the Durham Heritage Coast.
Step back in time and discover Durham's fascinating history and heritage at award-winning attractions including Beamish Museum and Locomotion - The National Railway Museum at Shildon. And if you crave culture, you can't get much better than the incredible collections and contemporary exhibitions at The Bowes Museum.
Durham has a packed year-round calendar of events to enjoy too, with tickets for the Lindisfarne Gospels exhibition going on sale in March, and Durham also plays host to The Ashes in 2013 at the Emirates Durham International Cricket Ground.
Take a short break in Durham and discover the cobbled streets of the city, where stylish boutiques and quirky craft shops jostle for attention alongside big name brands, whilst our lovely market towns offer their own unique shopping experiences. Take some time out in a cosy pub next to the open fire, or blow the cobwebs away on a walk through the changing landscape.
And just when you think you've seen it all, Durham will continue to delight with hidden gems around every corner.

"Overall this is a great apartment"
First - this is a great apartment. We had a few issues on arrival, but we will certainly go back. As I am sure the problems we had will be rectified. The apartment had not been cleaned....the shower wa… More
Thanks for taking the time to review Moonlight Apartment so fairly: I'm glad you found it attractive, and really pleased you gave us the chance to fix the problems promptly. Our housekeeper apologises, and admits she was working against a bit of time stress that day. We have bitten the bullet and ordered some 'proper' mini-jams; and butter is now supplied in its original wrapping. I think we may rationalise the bottle collection down to just the best ones!

"VERY NOISY; generally disappointing for the price"
The owner should make it crystal clear that this apartment, on the second floor front of this block of flats (the website photo shows a different flat!!!), overlooks a very busy main-road entry to the… More
Thank you for taking the trouble to review Moonlight Apartment. Although we have indeed stayed in the apartment in the past, some problems are only apparent when a guest lets us know about them, and I was grateful to learn about the jamming bedroom door which I have just fixed. I've also adjusted the angle of the TV to make for more comfortable viewing.
The very first photo on www.moonlightapartment.co.uk Photo Gallery does in fact show Moonlight Apartment, on the second floor, overlooking the street - and all the other photos apart from one extra outside shot show the Apartment accurately I believe.
We all like a bargain, but I'd say the £ 118/night rate is not bad for a 5-star rated property which accommodates 4 at this time of year.
We did provide electric fans to mitigate the heat as far as possible, but this stay was in the hottest week I can remember in Durham for many years - so I sympathise with the need for ventilation versus noise from the street. That, to an extent, is the downside of our very central position in the City. Our other property (Durham Oasis) is set back further from the road and has smaller windows, so if we have a solution, that's it.
In the bathroom we really wanted a walk-in shower, plus a washbasin, lavatory and bath. (If you can suggest to my wife a better layout, she would be fascinated to know about it!) The bathroom does of course have an extractor, and while having to open the window while standing in the bath is not ideal, it's not too difficult in my experience.
Our spiral staircase is described in the website precisely because we know some guests will not take to it. While there are non-slip handrails I'm now considering adding some non-slip tread to the stairs in the light of your helpful comment.
Finally, upstairs there is an additional overhead light which I tested today and found sufficient for reading in bed - but we really would not have minded if you'd moved one of the other 3 table lamps to the bedside...

"Great location, good flat"
Nice flat in a fantastic central location. The owner was pleasant to deal with. Not ideal for young kids given the spiral stairs and the owners penchant for glassware, but nothing that a little bit of… More

"Potentially fabulous but needs some tweaks"
We stayed here for three nights over New Year. Generally, it is a pleasant, characterful flat with quirky, modern décor, well-equipped and with an excellent information folder with instructions for h… More
Thanks for your helpful review: we do aim for the fabulous, clearly we have a little bit of maintenance to do. Normally it's me (Ray) who admits guests and checks everything, including the temperature, beforehand but on this occasion I'd had to delegate the job to our cleaner. She is lovely but notoriously overheated, and has her own bizarre view of acceptable temperature. I've now talked to her about it. My belief is that the shower does work 100%, but the controls are perhaps a bit stiff so I'll attend to that of course. The margarine should not have been there at all - left by the previous guest; the jam and marmalade issue is one to which we are seeking a non-wasteful solution! I understand the butter provided was, thankfully, pristine. We'll prune the bottle collection I think...
