The County Durham region

Durham is well known for its Norman cathedral and 11th-century castle, both designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. The castle has been the home of Durham University since 1832.Durham is situated 13 miles (21 km) to the south west of Sunderland, England. The River Wear flows north through the city, making an incised meander which encloses the centre on three sides to form Durham's peninsula.

At the base of the peninsula is the Market Place, which still hosts regular markets; a permanent indoor market, Durham Indoor Market, is also situated just off the Market Place. The Market Place and surrounding streets are one of the main commercial and shopping areas of the city. From the Market Place, The Bailey leads south past Palace Green; The Bailey is almost entirely owned and occupied by the university and the cathedral.

Durham is a hilly city, claiming to be built upon the symbolic seven hills. Upon the most central and prominent position high above the Wear, the cathedral dominates the skyline. The steep riverbanks are densely wooded, adding to the picturesque beauty of the city. West of the city centre, another river, the River Browney, drains south to join the Wear to the south of the city.

Durham

Plenty to do and see in and around Durham City, attractions include: Durham Castle, Durham Cathedral, Binchester Roman Fort, Raby Castle, Crook Hall and Gardens, Bowes Castle, Eggleston Hall Gardens, Durham University Botanic Garden, Hardwick Park, The Bowes Museum, Tanfield Railway, Weardale Railway, Derwentcote Steel Furnace, Locomotion:The National Railway Museum at Shildon, Beamish - The Living Museum of the North,Killhope, The North of England Lead Mining Museum, Ruff 'N' Tumble Adventure World, The Playshack, Hall Hill Farm, Prince Bishop River Cruiser and Browns Rowing Boats, Beamish Wild Adventure Park,Diggerland.

The River Wear is host to a number of regattas and head races throughout the year. These include: The Novice Cup, Wear Long Distance Sculls, and Senate Cup in November and December; Durham Small Boats Head in February; Durham City Regatta in May; Durham Regatta and Admirals Regatta in June; and Durham Primary Regatta in September. In addition to the competitive rowing and sculling of the boat clubs mentioned above, there is also a thriving hire of public pleasure boats from April to October.

Thank you for your review and we have taken your comments on board. We are sorry that you think your experience wasn't as good as it should have been.

When you were lost looking for the apartment and I came to collect you so you could follow me back to the apartment I immediately informed you that we were having a problem with the heating, but it was being fixed. This problem was found early in the morning when the property was checked. The heating was fixed by late afternoon on the day of your arrival and the property was warm within a few hours. You informed me that you wanted to leave. There was really no need for you to have to go anywhere but I informed you at the time that if you left we would only be able to refund 1 nights stay as a show of goodwill, which given we had turned down other bookings and everything was working perfectly, we felt was very reasonable in deed.

You were informed before you came that the apartment was ground floor. You did not mention anything about a smell of “rotten canes” to me at the time nor the scratch on the frying pan or the pea in the dishwasher filter. Apologies if there was a smell, we have never had any problems before but shall keep and eye out for anything in future and also will make sure the dishwasher filter is checked regularly.

It is a shame you did not enjoy your experience and apologise if we could have done anything more.
