The Northern England / Northumberland region

Beamish has easy access to the A1, which will take you further north to Alnwick and the Heritage Coast, where a day can be spent exploring the many historic castles and friendly villages set amongst unspoilt golden sandy beaches. Not too far away is the Metro Centre - one of the largest shopping centres in Europe with an abundance of shops and eateries. For cricket fans, Durham County Cricket Club’s ground, ’The Riverside’, is a short drive away at Chester-le-Street. The cottage is in an ideal location for exploring all the north eastern counties, while the city of Durham with its lovely cathedral and river walks should not be missed. Shops ½ mile, pub and restaurant 2 minutes walk.
The Durham / Beamish area
Beamish Museum, the open-air ’Living Museum of the North’ which recreates life in the North East over various points in history, including a working coal mine, village, farm and tram system, makes a great day out. The Beamish Valley is one of the most important archaeological landscapes in England. A picturesque river setting, it boasts country inns and gastro pubs serving home cooked food. A 15 minute walk up the back road and you will find Tanfield Railway the world’s oldest working railway and engine shed.

| Nearest Travel Links | |
| Airport: | Newcastle International: 25 km |
| Railway: | Durham Train Station: 21 km |
| Ferry: | North Shields: 28 km |
Follow the A1(M) until you reach the turn off for Chester-le-Street. At the roundabout take the road sign-posted A693 for Stanley and the Beamish Museum. Take this road, and head for Stanley. After crossing two roundabouts, you will come across a third, roundabout where the signs for Beamish Museum tell you to turn off to the right - take this turn.
Just in front of the arched entrance to the museum, there is a left turn, which you must take. Keep on this road down into the bottom of the valley, past a high wall on your left and through a very sharp left- hand turn, past the Coppy Lodge on your right, until you arrive at a 'T' junction, with a hump-backed bridge to the left. Turn right at this junction, the road goes up then levels out and then up and levels out again. You will now see The Black Horse public house on your right set back from the road down a short lane.
Turn right into the Black Horse and then turn right and continue down to the bottom of the Car Park, you will see a small track leading down the hill. Continue down this track until you reach the bottom and you will see Huckleberry Cottage on your right.

The pictures for this cottage do not do it justice, my partner and I arrived at the Cottage and were very amazed. The cottage is set within a minutes's walk of the delightful Black Horse Pub, where you can always pop to for amazing locally sourced food if you can't face cooking yourself. However with the beautiful Range cooker, hot pot and fondue set you really can't resisit catering for yourself! The cottage's classic stone floor is cosily heated with underfloor heating and their is a roaring fire in the living room. The beautifl sun room conservatory is ideal for eating your dinner whilst taking is peaceful views of the surrounding hills. The bedrooms are tastefully decorated with really comfortable beds and the master bedroom even has a plasma TV on the wall. Their is wifi throughout the cottage and there are games and a large TV in the country classic master living room. We really enjoyed our stay here and will be returning next year, I'm even booking a 3 night stay for my parents as a Xmas gift! I cannot speak highly enough about Huckleberry cottage, my partner and I loved it! Only 15 minutes (£15 taxi!) to Newcastle & 25 to Tynemouth too so a perfect little location! |

We had a lovely stay at Huckleberry Cottage, every effort has been made by the owners to create well equipped accommodation and the location is really outstanding. It literally is in the middle of a field (with vehicle access) so there is no through traffic, apart from the odd dog walker, which meant a really peaceful stay with beautiful countryside views. The bed was very comfortable with plump pillows and plenty of soft towels in the bathroom and no end of hot water! The kitchen is also very well equipped, it even has a slow cooker and a fondue set. I would highly recommend this as a place to stay and only wish we'd had time to try the food in the pub at the top of the hill. |
