The Northern England / Northumberland region
From heather-clad moors and bold limestone scars, to lively market towns and the steady pace of country life - the sublime Dales await you! Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer? Surely, nowhere as much as in the Yorkshire Dales?
Both a National Park and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the region’s stunning scenery includes rolling hay meadows, striking limestone formations, grand heather-laden moors and picture-postcard perfect villages. A paradise for walkers, the Yorkshire Dales attract enthusiasts from far and wide as the long distance Pennine Way and Coast-to-Coast routes pass through the area. Cycling through the Dales is also popular – keen cyclists will enjoy the varied scenery and occasional ‘hilly’ sections of the 130 miles of Yorkshire Dales Cycleway, as it winds its way through Swaledale, Wensleydale and Coverdale. All of this, as well as exploring the imposing rock formations, echoing caves and potholes, will satisfy the most adventurous spirit, whilst Semer Water, the largest natural lake in Yorkshire, will keep any water-sport enthusiast happy. If you’re looking for more relaxing pursuits, there’s much more to see than magnificent scenery. Stone-built villages nestling in valley bottoms, picturesque towns with vibrant craft centres and markets, imposing castles, stunning gardens and fine architecture are all part of the Dales’ appeal.
Grassington, Wharfedale’s main town, boasts beautiful cobbled streets and quaint shops that take the visitor on a journey back in time, whilst the lively town of Hawes is home to the award winning Dales Countryside Museum, a fascinating range of shops and craft galleries and a sample or two of the famous ‘Wensleydale’ cheese at the Creamery is a treat not to be missed!
The Durham / Lanchester area
Set in the beautiful countryside of County Durham is the village of Lanchester, approximately eight miles to the west of Durham itself. Taking its name from the Roman fort of Longovicium, the site of the current village has been home to a settlement for centuries. Today, the connection with the Romans attracts historians and archaeologists, as does the nearby 'Roman Dere Street'. Now a thriving and substantial village, Lanchester offers a wide range of shops, pubs and restaurants, whilst the surrounding countryside provides exceptional walking trails including the Lanchester Valley Walk which runs the course of a disused railway line from Consett to Durham. Durham City itself is just eight miles away whilst Newcastle is just 20 miles, offering visitors a thriving metropolis full of culture, superb shopping facilities, live music and theatre.

A quaint cottage with all the amenities we needed, however as it slept 6 it would have been nice if there was seating for 6 in the living room. The TV was old and made a funny noise. The 3rd bedroom/seating area was VERY cold and some areas smell of damp slightly although the rest of the house was lovely and warm.We had 2 cars and had difficulty turning so as not to reverse out onto a main road. Overall we had a very pleasant stay. |

Loved the size and layout of the cottage. Style successfully achieved with smart decor and furniture. Our teenage children couldn't wait to explore it. Loved the aubergine-colour theme. Really... more |

This cottage was even better than the description! A bedroom and shower room is completely separate form the other 2 bedrooms and bathroom which made it ideal for our newlyweds who were in our group!... more |
Guestbook for 2618 - Prospect Cottage
The cottage was extremely spacious and comfortable. It was very convenient for the local shops, pubs/restaurants and bus service. We enjoyed lots of walks in the beautiful countryside and visited Durham, Newcastle, Corbridge and Hexham. A very enjoyable holiday.

,A great location. Very friendly owners, great cottage for a split group with two self-contained 'wings' off the main living area.

,The friendliness of the villagers - especially in the church - and of people everywhere; the village facilities; the secluded but not isolated position of the cottage; the helpful owners; the well-equipped kitchen; the lovely countryside and interesting places to visit.
Your courteous efficiency.
Mrs Luff, Totnes, Devon

,The location of the cottage was superb in a very pretty village with good amenities. The road networks were excellent and a 2 minute walk to the bus stop with very regular buses. The surrounding countryside was very scenic but not far from larger towns and cities (best of both worlds).
The cottage was lovely - 'chocolate box' from outside and very spacious and comfortable inside.
Mrs Milburn, Bridlington, East Riding of Yorkshire
