Home description

On its own hill at the edge of a small farming hamlet, the house has views across a rural idyll of undulating fields, woods, orchards and vineyards. Set back from the road and not overlooked, cars can be parked off the road and out of sight of the house.

Originally a farmhouse and barn, it has been painstakingly restored. The barn is now the high ceilinged, oak-beamed living room with a minstrel’s gallery leading to the bedrooms. There is a large kitchen and the number of other rooms provide a variety of accommodation for 6 people but is also just as nice for 2. Each room has its own individuality with doors and french windows giving access to the outside.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Lot et Garonne region

Near the historic market town of Duras, La Legue is a suitable centre for visits to the Dordogne valley with its world famous prehistoric cave paintings, cliff dwellings, and romantic mediaeval chateaux, as well as the wine chateaux of St. Emilion/Bordeaux and Entre Deux Mers. There are vineyards and orchards in abundance, the latter often devoted to producing the famous pruneaux d’Agen while everywhere you are reminded of the historical importance of a region that provided the backcloth to much of the 100 Years War which left as its legacy many fine mediaeval chateaux and the ‘bastides’ or fortified market towns several of which, for example, Eymet and Monpazier, remaining largely as they were created 600 years ago.

Duras area

The roads are small and quiet, and there is no sound of distant motorways. The countryside is beautiful and the villages picturesque. This is an area renowned for its wine and food which can be experienced in well priced restaurants or excellent produce can be bought in local markets and shops. There are chateaux, old churches, caves, rivers and famous vineyards (St. Emilion, Pomerol, Monbazillac, Bergerac, Cotes de Duras).

The local farms grow a variety of crops. There is wonderful blossom in the orchards in spring and later harvests of plums, grapes, maize or sunflowers. Each farm has vines which are good to walk through. At the top of the hamlet is a forest for longer walks (in September there are Cepes and Truffles – if you can find them!)

ACTIVITIES
For GOLF, there is an 18 hole course at Chateau des Vigiers, Monestier (25km), 9 holes at Golf de Barthe, Tombeboeuf (25km), and 10 holes at Golf de Marmande (20km).

CYCLING is very popular as the countryside is ideal – quiet country lanes and rolling, picturesque country. There are several shops locally where you can hire bicycles.

TENNIS COURTS can be found in St. Sernin de Duras (1.5km).

Further details indoors:
There are terracotta tiles throughout the ground floor and the walls are authentically uneven and made of stone. A lot of the furniture is polished rather than varnished and the feel within the house is of solidity, peacefulness and space. There are good acoustics for the cassette player and an excellent fiction library.

Further details outdoors:
In the garden there is plenty of nature, this is rural France! There are birds, butterflies, lizards sunning themselves, tiny green tree frogs, preying mantis and the occasional toad. Frogs can be heard against a background of cicadas and harmless bats flicker swiftly through the garden on a summer’s evening. Wildflowers include orchids, ladysmock, vetches, violets by the small river, poppies, cow parsley and buttercups in the fields. There's a hammock slung between two cherry trees and a covered patio for sipping wine while watching the sunset. On the kitchen side, there's an old wisteria shading a veranda which is ideal for eating outside. Enjoy!
