The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Lot et Garonne region

This area is one of the most relaxing and lovely areas of SW France. The people are particularily friendly to their British guests! After all, they fought the french invaders for 100 years to stay under the rule of England. The local bastide villages are very pretty with excellent restaurants to suit all pockets. Yet in the summer it is not so crowded as some areas further east, and the less touristy prices reflex this.
For lovers of wine, this is an ideal centre to discover the vineyards of Bordeaux, St Emilion, The Medoc, Bergerac and of course our own Cote de Duras. Other local specialities are Foie Gras, Canard and Prunes, especially the chocolate coated ones. Don't laugh, they are delicious!!!
Duras is equi distant between the large Rivers Dordogne and Garonne, and the locals are very proud of their "micro climate" which is generally better than the areas north and south.
Visit the local "Bastide" villages like Eymet, the Black Prince's town, and Monsegue the home of Elianor of Aquitaine. Canoe on the Rivers Dordogne and Dropt. Fish, Ride at one of the local riding stables, walk or cycle on our quiet country lanes or just veg out round the pool and let the world pass you by for a little while.
The Duras area
Duras is 1 mile from Labarthe Cottage with Bars, Restaurants, Supermarket, Bakers, Newsagent with all the UK papers, Chemist, Doctors and even a Dentish. There are lots of other Bastde villages near by like Eymet and Monsegue which has a large annual Jazz Festival which attracts many big name jazz bands. Duras has a wine festival each year. In the imposing Chateau de Duras there are lots of plays, operas, and music festivals during the summer, some in the open air and others in the hugh hall inside the Chateau.
For wine lovers this is the place to be! The vineyards of Bordeau, St Emilion, The Medoc, Bergerac and Duras are all within easy reach. We can arrange private visits to some of the top Medoc Chateaux, something you will not be able to do independantly.

The title says it all. Labarthe has a sizeable, solar heated pool that is not overlooked and has great views across the valley. Sheila and Gordon were friendly and welcoming and not at all intrusive. Additionally, they were able to recommend the best wine of the area! |
Guestbook for Labarthe Cottage
Our second visit and just as enjoyable. The pool was brilliant to cool off when it was too hot and the view is still magnificant. Thank you for your excellent hospitality.
