The Aquitaine region

The Aquitaine region is famous for its wine, food and beautiful countryside. It is steeped in history and offers an amazing collection of bastide towns and medieval villages. It is easy driving to wander from village to village, enjoying the vistas of rolling hills, neat rows of vines and orchards of plum trees for the production of prunes. The Dordogne and Garonne rivers provide the opportunity for river sports such as kayaking, canoeing and fishing. Wine tasting in the region is world renowned at St Emilion which is a hub for tourists at its famous chateaux. The nearby Perigueux region in the Dordogne is a centre for the wonderful foie gras and the prehistoric caves. There is a superb golf course in the vicinity at Chateaux de Vigiers.

The summers are long and mild....temperatures often reaching into the 30s....and the evenings light in midsummer until 10:30pm.

Duras which is a 10 minute drive away is an historic bastide town with a magnificent castle and view over the surrounding countryside. It has a bustling market on Monday morning where fresh produce can be bought and one can sit and have a coffee overlooking the marketplace. St Foy La Grande 15 minutes in the other direction is a larger medieval town with its weekly Saturday market one of the top 100 in France. The area has numerous beautiful chateaux to visit or wine tasting to indulge in and sample the wonderful wines of the region. Meander around surrounding villages and enjoy the picturesque buildings and views from the hilltops. Vineyards and plum orchards and fields of sunflowers in bloom extend as far as the eye can see. Bordeaux ( a World Heritage site) is only an hour's drive away for a taste of culture and city life with its theatre, restaurants and beautiful buildings.
