Near the historic market town of Duras, Colombine is a suitable centre for visits to the Dordogne valley with its world famous prehistoric cave paintings, cliff dwellings, and romantic mediaeval chateaux, as well as the wine chateaux of St. Emilion/Bordeaux and Entre Deux Mers. There are vineyards and orchards in abundance, the latter often devoted to producing the famous pruneaux d’Agen while everywhere you are reminded of the historical importance of a region that provided the backcloth to much of the 100 Years War which left as its legacy many fine mediaeval chateaux and the ‘bastides’ or fortified market towns several of which, for example, Eymet and Monpazier, remaining largely as they were created 600 years ago.

We have renovated our old prune oven barn (we're not sure exactly how old it is, but it features on the Plan Napoleon which makes it at least 160 years old) into a cottage. The cottage is well equipped and furnished and sleeps 6 in three bedrooms – one double (160x200) and two twin (2 beds 90x200), although please note that one of the twin rooms can also be converted to make a king. It is baby and toddler friendly with a cot or bed rails available; and a highchair. There is a bathroom with bath, open shower, washbasin and WC; a separate WC with hand washbasin; and a shower room with washbasin and shower. The cottage is all on one level, so no stairs to negotiate, and is wheelchair accessible.

For those seeking winter accommodation or a long let, the cottage is double glazed and well insulated with electric radiators and wood-burning stove.

Where possible we have retained the old stone walls and character of the original building, which was open on two sides, except for one room which is now the sitting room. The dining room retains the openness of the original by having two large sliding windows all along one side, giving the room a light airy feel. The horseshoe shaped kitchen fits snugly into the old prune drying area.

The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

"This entire valley is so full of vineyards, flowered meadows, cultivated fields, fruit tree plantations deliciously shaded by hedges, watered by springs, crossed by streams, rich in harvests, that their owners seem to have had a vision of paradise".

So wrote Sidoine Apollinaire, the Latin poet some 1500 years ago about the valley of the river Dropt. These words could have been written about the area today, so little has changed. It is now as then, a peaceful retreat from the rigours of life.

Enjoy strolling round the many village MARKETS available almost every morning of the week, soak up the atmosphere of several evening markets and the many village fêtes and concerts.

As you might expect in this part of France, where local people expect to eat well, there is an abundance of excellent, well-priced RESTAURANTS.

MEMORABLE DAY TRIPS would include a visit to the Vezere valley to see the cave paintings at Lascaux as well as the other caverns and prehistoric cliff dwellings and the historic and romantic mediaeval chateaux of the Dordogne.

Duras

COLOMBINE is situated near the village of Pardaillan (the childhood home of author Marguerite Duras) in the heart of the Guyenne, the ancient name for a region which now comprises parts of the departments of Gironde, Dordogne and Lot et Garonne. We are also in the Cotes de Duras AOC wine producing area and near the historic market town of Duras with its imposing mediaeval chateau.

THE COTES DE DURAS was one of the first wine producing areas of France to be awarded AOC status and you can sample the light but fruity reds and crisp dry whites by visiting some of the 50 or so growers. We are also close to the Cotes de Bergerac, Entre Deux Mers and Cotes de Marmandais as well as being within easy reach of St. Emilion and the other Bordeaux regions.

Within about 20 – 40 minutes drive there are two 9 hole and three 18 hole GOLF COURSES.

CYCLING is very popular as the countryside is ideal – quiet country lanes and rolling, picturesque country. There are several shops locally where you can hire bicycles.

Nearby are TENNIS courts, CANOEING along the river Dropt, and a PONY club.

"Very relaxing"

From reading all the previous reviews we realise that everyone has different priorities & expectations from a holiday home, we can only comment on ours. The house is beautifully situated, well furnishe… More

We welcome all feedback and as a result have replaced the oven and dealt with the other comments received.
In relation to the gardens, we would just like to clarify that although the grounds are shared with our house, this is only occupied for about 4 weeks a year so the rest of the time guests have sole use of the approximately 16 acres.

"Another memorable holiday"

This was our second visit to Colombine and once again we appreciated the layout of the property and its tranquil location. Our daughter, who is disabled and relies on use of a power chair, enjoyed the freedom afforded by the level surfaces both inside and outside the cottage. Unfortunately we were not blessed with particularly good weather during our stay but nevertheless found the comfortable sitting areas ideal for reading and playing games. We also purchased plenty of local produce and made good use of the well equipped kitchen. Overall a very welcoming and pleasing holiday home.

"Everything we could have wished for."

Wanted to keep it to ourselves, but that would be selfish. Owner very efficient and friendly re. doing the booking. Happy to answer silly questions.
The gite is very clean and well managed by Chris and Dave who live locally.
It is extremely comfortable and beautifully situated.

"Perfect family accommodation!!!!!!!!!"

Our holiday to France was our first family holiday with our 4 year old boy and 2 year old girl. It was certainly one to remember and the children had an amazing time not least because of the pool. It was the entire focus of their attention from cleaning it to swimming in it even though it was cold they out on their wet suits and jumped in. The house was beautiful and a real home from home. It was superb being on one level with small children and the large bathroom was a bonus. The house is beautifully positioned in a very quiet area surrounded by wheat fields and plenty of lawn for running off all that excess energy. Locally there are some lovely towns and villages but if you just want to relax and play Colombine is the place to do it. Whatever your requirements you will not be disappointed. We weren't and would love to return one day soon.

"Heaven on earth!"

I spent a blissful week from 5 -12 May at Colombine and really didn't want to leave.
It was everything I had hoped for and more, in that it exceeded my expectations. It was every bit as beautiful and tasteful as the photos portrayed, if not better.
The communication with the owners prior to booking was very efficient and friendly and specific instructions, such as where to buy food supplies en route on a Sunday and directions from the airport, were spot on.
The cottage itself is so pretty and charming it really is pure chocolate box; it was also a highly practical living space, spotlessly clean and had everything I needed for a restful holiday.
The kitchen is quirky and full of character and extremely well equipped and the bedroom I stayed in was wonderfully comfortable, as was the lounge area. I had the woodburner going on two nights when I chose to stay in and the room was fabulously cosy. I was on my own but it would be superb for 6 adults or a family as the other two bedrooms were spacious and the cottage itself so brilliantly designed you wouldn't feel on top of each other in any of the rooms. The bathroom facilities were perfectly thought out and the small utility room had all the equipment you would need for washing, ironing, cleaning etc, should any of that be necessary.
There are countless TV channels to choose from - and WI-FI - but that's only if you can bear to tear yourself away from the garden. The terrace, covered in a magnificent purple wisteria is stunning and the whole garden is immaculately kept and beautiful to walk round or just sit in and admire. There are fruit and nut trees in, and vines around the property, and a wealth of wildlife to be heard and admired.
The lighting inside and out has been very well thought out and both access around the propperty, and security, is excellent.
The Property's managers, a Yorkshire couple, live in the next village and were very friendly and helpful. Not that I needed anything at all in addition to what I already had.

I have stayed in numerous gites and holiday cottages in France and in the UK and can honestly say that this is my all time favourite.
I would live there if I could.
