The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

The summer climate varies between 25 - 40 degrees c.

Bergerac is only 30 minutes away and the many bastide towns and villages of the Aquitaine are within easy driving distanc; most of these have hardly changed since they were built hundreds of years ago. Eymet, Miramont, Duras, St Foy Le Grande, Monpazier, Issigeac and Monsegur are definitely worth a visit. On market days (or during summer months night markets also) these towns and villages really come to life, offering the perfect opportunity to experience the joie de vivre of this beautiful region. The markets are a great way to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the musical entertainment on offer, as well of course as sampling the local food and wine and to peruse and purchase local arts, crafts and produce.

A trip further afield to the Atlantic coast, just beyond Bordeaux, is well recommended. Here you will find the highest sand dunes in Europe and some beautiful sandy beaches along this fantastic coastline. Arcachon is a bustling seaside town with excellent restaurants, shops, cafes, marina and water sports on offer.

The region is bursting with beauftiful vineyards, most offering tours and wine tasting; when driving through the countryside look out for signs saying 'Vin' or 'Vin Degustation' for an impropmtu tour or tasting and to stock up on the resonably priced local wines! Local vineyards to Moustier include : Berticot, Trucasson, Duras and Buzet, to name but a few. Slightly further afield are St Emillion and Bordeaux.

Most restaurants offer a plat du jour, or prix fix menus at reasonable prices, often including wine.

Duras

Medieval spectacles are performed throughout the local area in the summer months. Tourist Information offices will give details, because pre -booking is advisable. The impressive, medieval chateau at Duras dominates the skyline from its hillside position and is a fantastic place to while away a few hours, followed by a wander through Duras town, perhaps stopping to enjoy an aperitif in one of its pavement cafes. There are many other chateaux and places of interest to visit in the region.

The nearby lakes at Lougratte and Pomport are perfect for swimming with their sandy beaches. With play areas, cafes and pedalos for hire, they offer many hours of fun and relaxation children and adults alike. Cycling, golfing, fishing, canoeing, and not to forget walking, are just some of the activities on offer.

"A piece of paradise"

We stayed for two weeks and loved every minute of it. The spacious house and garden give you a wonderful sense of privacy. Upon arrival there was a welcome pack containing 2 bottles of wine, bread, cheese, among other items. The cupboards were well stocked with plenty of condiments, herbs, spices etc.
We travelled with two teenagers and one 5-year old and all loved the house and the area. The couple looking after the house were very helpful at all times. Highly recommended.

"Wonderful well equipped Villa in a quiet rural setting"

We stayed in this lovely rural villa for a week early July. We're veteran self caterers and must say this villa surpassed our expectations being by far the best equipped we have stayed in. The property is obviously a second home rather than an investment opportunity so everything is in tip top condition and of a very high standard. We can only hope all future holiday makers respect this and take care to leave Vigneau as they found it.

The property is set in a slightly elevated position above the road in large wooded grounds and is very peaceful. There is a large patio which is great to sit out on. There is an above ground pool that is more than adequate for a nice swim. For foodies who like to cook the kitchen is as good as back home and has everything you need including an American Fridge / Freezer with ice maker and a large range cooker. The lounge is equipped with a large TV with freesat and a DVD player. All the bedrooms are very nicely decorated with good quality bedding and furniture.

Outside, animal lovers will have good opportunity to spot a large variety of wildlife. Also, 2 miles up the road there is a vineyard with very friendly owners who gave us a fantastic deal on some wine purchases – their rose wine is simply delightful. The nearby Inter Marche store puts most supermarkets back home to shame, so plenty to buy there or at various local markets.

We really enjoyed our stay and look forward to a future visit.
