About this location
The Aquitaine region
The typical climate during summer varies between 25 - 40 degrees c
Due to the turbulent history of France in the middle ages there are many medieval chateaux well worth a visit, Castelnaud being one of the most popular.
In the SW region of France there are many bastide towns, and villages that remain largely as they were created hundreds of years ago, little has changed. They come to life on market days, where regional produce and delicacies are plentiful. It is an experience to wander around soaking up the atmosphere. Too many to list but Issigeac, Eymet, Miramont, Duras, St Foy Le Grande, Monségur are worth a mention.
If you want to venture further afield the Atlantic coast is about 90 mins away, offering fantastic sandy beaches, water sports, and excellent seafood restaurants.
Many vineyards have tours where you experience wine production methods and of course tastings, a wine lovers dream. The local ones being Duras Berticot, Marmande, Buzet, Bergerac, but Bordeaux, St Emillion, medoc are all within easy reach.
Most restaurants offer a very reasonably priced plat du jour, often with wine included.
Birdwatchers/twitchers will have a fieldday, many species are seen, Hoopoes, ( almost parrot like )
Golden Oriele, ( bright, pretty bird, and what a lovely whistle) and Cirl Bunting, to name but a few, ( IN MARCH A PAIR OF OSPREYS ON A NEARBY FARMERS IRREGATION LAKE)
During the spring (cuckoo) and long summer months there is nothing better than leaving windows open listening to the nightly chorus of cicadas, (crickets), tree frogs, nightingales and nightjars.
Canoeing on the Dordogne provides a slow and leisurely way of sightseeing as you pass picturesque villages, chateaux and points of interest. Canoe hire is also available on the local river Dropt
During August the Duras fete du vin which is held in the spectacular chateau Duras, is a must, 5€ entry and all day local wine tasting, canopes and entertainment.
Casteljaloux is a spa town with baths and saunas and offer massage facilities, and is about 40 mins away.
Marmande is a major town and hosts many events throughout the summer, markets, fetes, the well attended annual music festival held in the streets and squares is well worth a visit.
Most villages have weekly day/night markets, and annual fetes. The nearest one, Levignac friday night market being our favourite.( interesting, cosy, friendly and literally 5 mins up the road ) ( Duras is 10 mins and it is such a special place, and is renowned for it's rosé)
There are tourist information offices in most towns, locally Duras, Miramont, Marmande and Eymet.
The local village of Levignac also has a small supermarket, cafe bar, butcher, chemist, modern health centre and doctor and is 5 mins away by car.
Le Vieux Porche Restaurant in Seyches is excellent value for money, and only 10 mins away.

"A home from home"
This is a wonderful villa in a beautiful location. It is not just a holiday home, it is Peter and Linda's main residence and consequently it has almost everything you could possibly need, particularly in respect of the kitchen. They currently stay in a caravan at another property they are renovating, but met us on arrival and turn up every 3-4 days for about an hour to clean the pool and water plants etc. They do not invade your privacy in any way, but are happy offer advice on local restaurants, markets etc if asked. They are also on the end of a phone, but we found no need to call them.
We particularly enjoyed the peace and quiet, whilst sitting just outside the main bedroom, appreciating the view over the pool and the early morning sun as we sipped our first coffee of the day. As the day proceeds and gets hotter, this same area offers welcome shade.
Another benefit at the time we were there (July) was the vegetable patch which had numerous tomato plants which we were encouraged to take advantage of. The cherry tomatoes are as sweet as I've tasted.
There is plenty to do and see in the area if you don't mind driving a bit, lots of Bastide villages and plenty of vineyards for those that like tastings rather than just buying from the supermarket - or raiding Peter's supplies (he'll rely on your honesty to pay for what you drink).
The television is Sky Freeview with all the normal channels if you want to watch, the WiFi is certainly adequate and quite useable outside which kept the teenagers happy. If you're feeling more energetic, there's the table tennis table and the pool which is plenty long enough for swimming lengths.
Overall, definitely recommended.
