The Costa del Sol/Malaga region
Costa del Sol has been the holiday centre of Spain for many years. The older resorts are cleaning up their act but for perfect peace and sunshine, go West to Duquesa.
Day trips include Seville, Granada, Casares, Marbella, Puerto Banus, Selwo safari park in Estepona, Ronda, Gibraltar, Tarifa, Jerez, Sierra Nevada and Tangier.
Duquesa / Golf and Gardens Complex area
Estepona Estepona is a pleasant seaside town with many shops and restaurants. There is a lovely promenade and a huge Carrefour supermarket if you are self catering. There is a market on a Wednesday with a good choice of local produce. In the hills behind Estepona is a safari park called Selwo that comes highly recommended. Allow at least half a day. Other family attractions include a combined water and theme park called Prado World with water slides, mini golf, rollerskating and other kids activities.
Marbella is arguably the Costa del Sol's most up market resort. It certainly still attracts the rich and famous and is a very chic beachside retreat for the wealthy international crowd. If you want to join them on the promenade, it is around 30 minutes from La Duquesa.
Seville is about 2 hours drive, mostly along new roads. It is the home of the flamenco. Worth visiting are the 15th century cathedral and the Giralda, a 12th century minaret from the Moorish era.
Granada is a 2 1/2 hour drive along motorways through the mountains. Ensure you have an up to date map. The city is vibrant and well worth a visit for itself but the pearl of the destination is the Alhambra. The Sierra Nevada ski area is half an hour from Granada.
Tarifa is along the coast beyond Gibraltar. The wind is funnelled in from the Atlantic to the Straits of Gibraltar so the conditions are always windy. It is famous for surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. It is also a great place to go on whale and dolphin watching tours.
Gibraltar is about 30 minutes southwest along the coastal motorway. There aren't many road signs from Spain so keep your eyes open. Access is from Algeciras. Remember to bring your passport! In high season, the queues to leave can be long. it can be quicker to park your car on the Spanish side and walk across. The rock is very impressive to see and there are sights of historical note as well as duty free shopping. As well as the apes, you can see dolphins on a boat trip into the bay or visit the botanical gardens.
Tangier can also be visited for a day or overnight on one of the ferries. An exotic experience we really enjoyed.
How to get there
Fly to Malaga airport for about an hour's easy drive along the costal highway or fly to the small Gibraltar airport for a 25 minute drive. Try ViaMichelin for a good route planner

Guestbook for Duquesa Suites Penthouse
Mark, South Wales We had a lovely time thanks, the apartment was really nice. The directions were fine thanks, but we stayed in the area last year so knew where to go. Gibraltar is a good day out, but be prepared for long waits to get in and out. A good idea is to walk across and catch the bus to the shops.
Marina, South Wales We had a fantastic time thank you. The apartment was perfect for us. Everything was just as we like it - brilliant. It was so good to go out of peak season it was much quieter. We're definitely putting this one on the top of our list and have recommended to several of our friends - watch this space would love to be there right now!
Clodagh, Co Kildare, Easter 2005 My friend and I and our two sons (aged 11 and 7) stayed in Duquesa Suites during Easter Break this year. The apartment is fabulous, everything you could need and more, large balcony that had the sun all evening and views of the main pool and the sea. Puerto de la Duquesa itself is a beautiful port with plenty of restaurants and bars. Our boys found pool tables in lots of the bars which kept them amused for an hour at night so we could have a glass or two of vino after our meal. We ate out everynight and tried lots of the restaurants and were never disappointed with any meal. The restaurant prices were very similar to Ireland. We spent lots of time driving and exploring the coast....Estepona only 15mins up the road from Duquesa is fab with really nice beach. Tivoli World in Benalmadena was brilliant fun for the boys and mums too, if the truth be told! We drove to Fungerola and then took the train along the coast to Malaga, excellent train service, and again kids really enjoyed it. Gibralta was another fantastic trip, lots to see and buy!!!! We had a fantastic week in Duquesa and would certainly recommend Denis & Kate's apartment here, it is top class and we will without doubt head back as soon as possible.
Emer, Dublin, March 2005 I just wanted to drop you a quick line to thank you for everything, we had a wonderful holiday and the apartment was fabulous, it had everything we could possibly ask for and more. Puerto de la Duquesa is also a lovely place for a holiday it was soooo relaxing, just what we needed after a hectic few months.
