The Costa del Sol/Malaga region
The Costa del Sol is the most southerly coast of Spain. This is where the unspoiled farming and vineyard mountain regions meet bustling cities and marinas, secluded coves and beachfront promenades.
On this coast there is something for everyone. It has been developed specifically for tourism and prides itself on world-class championship Golf Courses, over 30 including Valderama.
Sierra Nevada, the Andalucian Lakes and numerous national parks are all within 2 hours drive from the Costa del Sol providing unspoiled dramatic scenery and the ultimate in recreational activities.
For non-golfers there are established attractions such as the marinas of Puerto Banus, Marbella, Puerta Duquesa and Sotogrande as well as many traditional white wash mountain villages and fishing towns.
The natural beauty of the area is enhanced by over 300 days of sun a year as well as lush green landscapes providing an abundance of recreational activities.
Duquesa area
Puerto de la Duquesa holds the key to the classic balances that form a quality of life that some only ever dream of. The amalgamation of unspoiled breathtaking scenery, traditional Spanish architecture and modern developments have formed with a mild international influence to become one of the great marinas in the Costa del Sol.
The marina is at the heart of community life in this area. Its network of plazas and side streets host numerous international restaurants, cafes, bars and shops and is the epicentre of miles of palm tree lined promenades where morning and evening strolls are enjoyed by families and those romantic at heart. Perhaps the most attractive aspect of Puerto de la Duquesa is simply its location.
Puerto de la Duquesa is undoubtedly a great destination. By day the marina side cafes and bars are filled with tourists and locals enjoying the sunshine, the best in local cuisine and a cool drink or coffee. Love them or hate them Puerto de la Duquesa also has its fair share of Irish bars and English pubs as expected Football and Rugby dominate and you are sure to receive a warm greeting and excellent food and drink. Don’t forget to take time to browse the shops, enjoy the local restaurants and stroll around the marina and sea wall to admire the yachts and stunning coastal views.
At night is when you can enjoy a different atmosphere in Puerto de la Duquesa, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to dining out. The marina has over 20 different dining options ranging from tapas bars to English carvery and from Mexican to Indian. Entertainment options are also in abundance. The marina is home to numerous bars which host live entertainment, Karaoke and guest DJ’s so there is no shortage of places to party the night away. To enjoy a quiet drink or a romantic evening the marina is also the place to be. When the sun sets, the marina lights up and enjoys a new romantic charm. Several bars and restaurants have marina views and Puerta Duquesa has wine bars and lounges that cater for all ages and tastes and are sure to provide that perfect romantic setting.
Sabinillas is the heart of the Western Costa del Sol for all native Spaniards and the many settlers who fell in love with its charm and traditions. Sabinillas still remains largely undiscovered by most tourists. However once visited its charm is embracing and you are hooked by its small town atmosphere with promenade cafes, local tapas bars and friendly ‘Churinguitos’ which are the Spanish beach bars serving freshly caught fish and local delicacies.
Less than 25 years ago Sabinillas was simply a fishing village and as its main industry 90% of Sabinillas’ workforce worked on the local boats that can still be seen dotted across the shoreline. Sabinillas’ popularity has boomed due to vast development in local areas and this has lead to an increase in tourism and heavy investment has turned this once small fishing village into a fantastic tourist destination.
Today Sabinillas has developed into a charming beachside town and one of the few that has not succumbed to mass tourism and over development. The contrasts can be seen and most appreciated in early morning when the fishermen are pushing out there wooden boats ready to get the catch of the day. Families are out walking along the promenade watching the sun rise and the recently established bars, patisseries and cafes are opening ready to receive locals and tourists meeting for a relaxing day on the expansive beachfront promenades.
The busiest day by far in Sabinillas is Sunday when thousands come to visit the Sunday craft market. This is one of the most popular markets along the coast and definitely one not to be missed.
Sabinillas beach is one of the few beaches in the Costa del Sol to be honoured with the prestigious blue flag beach award. This certifies that as well as exceeding European environmental, health and safety standards the beach also offers the best in facilities and activities. The weekend is when Sabinillas beach really comes to life. The beach volleyball courts and table tennis tables are popular with those keen to show off their skills. Beach lovers and sun worshippers gather in droves to enjoy the ambience and beautiful scenery. Sabinillas beach enjoys a great location, great atmosphere and to add views can stretch from Africa to Marbella making this a stunning destination.
