Seaside cottage, Dungloe
About the home
The house is a traditional two bedroom cottage that has been recently and lovingly restored. We wanted to retain the integrity and character of the cottage, so there are many traditional features and period furniture with some beautiful paintings and pottery. That said the cottage provides visitors with all modern comforts. This is particularly evident in the living room/sun room which has a charming 'beach feel' with its painted wood floor and high ceiling.
The cottage sits on an acre at the end of a peninsula and has stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. You can sit and watch waves breaking off the rocks or watch the most amazing sunsets from the large living room windows or the two patios (one stone patio, one large wooden deck). There is also a beautiful white sandy beach behind the house. The house has two small double bedrooms, and a king size sofa bed in the living room. There is an open fire in the kitchen and a wood/turf burning stove in the large living room that looks out to the sea (plenty of turf included). cHECK OUT THE GUEST BOOK (FURTHER DOWN ON THE SITE) WHICH IS UPDATED REGULARLY AND EVERY COMMENT WE GET IS INCLUDED.

The Donegal region

From this typical Donegal rugged, rural setting you have unspoilt views of the most dramatic coastal and mountain scenery. The surrounding beaches are exceptional and unspoilt.

'We had the best week ever staying at your house. We absolutely loved the house, it was so beautifully restored, and the views- what can we say. The children had a ball. When they weren't on the beach they were fishing in rock pools in front of the house. Thank you for all your help'. Mrs S D, Newry.

‘My husband, myself and are two Bichon Frise dogs have just returned from a wonderful stay at this house. It is very plain that an awful lot of love and care has gone into the renovation of it and it is a pleasure to be able to stay there and share this idyllic setting. It was exactly what we had expected and wanted.
The beach is five minutes from the house and I walked the dogs to it and or the pier twice a day. We were so relaxed it was easy just to listen to music and play board games (never seem to have time to do these things at home).
We didn’t feel we wanted to go far from the cottage as we had everything we needed there and just enjoyed the tranquillity and ambience of it. But there are loads of things to do and see in the surrounding area from a half hour to one and half hour drive.
It will be next year before we can go back again and am looking forward to it already!’

'We really enjoyed the week in your lovely cottage. As my wife has worded it to the point: " A wonderful house and a beach for our dreams". Both our boys, my wife and myself felt very happy and welcome. You created the perfect mix of a homely atmosphere in a rural place by the sea, with all the amenities of modern living.
I personally have to admit that I could not get enough of the panoramic views out to the sea from your living room and that on more than one occasion, I stayed up until sunrise, being fascinated by the views.
Thank you again for sharing this special treasure with us. We definitely would like to come back another time'.
Best regards,

'I'm now back at work and wishing I was still in An Clochan Liath!
On the positive side the house is set in a stunning location enjoying views of mountains and the sea and we enjoyed having turf fires most nights. It is also a perfect base from which to explore beautiful Donegal.
My family had a great time there and we are sure that you will continue to have solid bookings every year.
Many thanks'

'A lovely, simple, classic cottage in a beautiful location, looking out on to the Atlantic Ocean. The cottage has a lovely garden and patio area. A great place to unwind and get away from everyday stress. The cottage is fully equipped with everything you need for an enjoyable stay. It is very clean and has a full supply of magazines, DVDs, books and games. Situated a few miles from Dungloe town it is within driving distance to lovely beaches and nice towns such as Burtonport (from which you can take a boat trip to Aranmore Island). We had a very enjoyable stay. We hope to return and would recommend the cottage to anyone looking for a peaceful, relaxing holiday'.

'-Beautiful cottage, lovingly restored, tranquil, peaceful, totally relaxing, ideal place to chill out. Views and scenery amazing, beautiful coastal walks, miles of beautiful quiet beach on our doorstep, really friendly neighbours. This cottage has everything. I just could go on and on. 'We had a fantastic week at your house. The only problem was it went too quick! Your house was very functional and cosy, especially the peat fires every night. The highlight of the week for us was the visit to the Slieve League Cliffs at Kilcar (absolutely breathtaking !). The location of the house was ideal. It was perfect for touring Donegal. As soon as we came back home we missed the big waves, peat fires and the beautiful beaches. It's been a brilliant family holiday for us (including Mido our Yorkie - who had a ball !!) We would love to visit again in the future'.

The holiday with my family in your Cottage in An Clochan Liath was a nice experience direct at the ocean. For two of my children it was the first step into the ocean at all and they feel happy about that. Between storm and sunny weather, we enjoyed each day whith a colourful skyline over the ocean. Donegal county is one of the best places in Ireland to stay for holiday. Maghery Beach and the way back to the cottage driving on the small road that crosses the mountain with the best view on the coast was the best experiance on the last day with nice sunny weather and a cold jump into the ocean.
Thanks, that we can stay in your gorgeous Cottage by a nice turf fire with a glass of Jamson and with a feeling of several years back to great-grandmothers time. Next time it will be fine to visit Dungloe at summer time, that we can enjoy the ocean by going swimming every day.

"We had a lovely stay at phyllis's home. The scenery was cracking and the peace a dream. We took our little King Charles with us and he had a fab time also. prepare for being off the beaten track a little, but thats the point in choosing this idyllic holiday home"

'Just a quick comment: I loved your cottage and found it a perfect place to relax and relish the beauty of Donegal. The way you had refurbished it to the highest standards and yet kept it simple was perfect, and the huge picture windows and French doors gave the sense of being outside even when we were in.
With best wishes and thanks for a lovely holiday - it will be hard to find such an unspoilt and beautiful cottage and place again'.

'Hi Phyllis. Glad to give you feedback for we had a lovely time. We had a great week in a very cosy cottage and well worth the long trek to reach one of the best locations in Ireland. Could not have wished for anything more and had some great walks with our dog either down to the rocks or on the beach. Looking forward to coming back next year to enjoy the peace and quiet of this idyllic place. Zena and Roger Tamworth Staffs.

'We had a fabulous time and the weather was really good. Played golf in Portnoo and Cruit Island and had an unbelievable day in Glenveagh on the Saturday. We both found it difficult to tear ourselves away and as for Finn (the springer) I reckon he still misses his early morning run to the pier through the peat bog!
We were very taken with the cottage. You have put a lot of work into the place and it's setting is just idyllic. Can't wait to go back. Thank you very much'

'My Wife and I really enjoyed our time at your cottage, the location is just absolutely stunning! We had our two dogs with us and as we stayed in November, there was no livestock and very few other people around so we were able to let the dogs run free, which in itself was fantastic as we have two Irish Setters and they are a bit hard to handle on leads!!
The cottage itself is very quaint and the weather meant that we were able to light both fires which was great, sitting having our coffee by the open fire in the morning was brilliant, we really appreciated the pile of turf outside!
We spent a week just relaxing and enjoying having nothing to do with all day to do it, in surroundings which were really comfortable and provided everything and more!'

We both loved the cottage and the area. We enjoyed walking along the sea near the cottage. The weather was variable with some good days and some wet, cool, and very windy. We still managed to go out exploring every day. We drove all the way up along the bloody forelands, to the beach at the Tory Island ferry, back around past Mt. Errigal and into the national park. We visited the castle there and came back to Dungloe via the south edge of the park. We found the scenery in that area to be stunning. We explored the Glencolumbkille peninsula on a very poor day but still managed to get to Slieve League, Killybegs, see the waterfall near Ardara, buy a tweedd jacket for me in Ardara and have a full Irish breakfats there.
In Dungloe we loved the Bayview restaurant/pub so much that we ate dinner there three times. The owner and staff were lovely and the food was quite nice. The prices were also better there than at equivalent restaurants locally (for example Cork City and Kinsale town). Dungloe was quiet this time of year though. Generally not a problem in my opinion.
I will say that one of the prettiest places I saw there was very close to the cottage on the upper sections of the back road to Maghery beach. Those observation stops next to the road there are simply gorgeous. And they are right in your own backyard, so to speak. I think the summer there would be really special.
Thank you for being so helpful to us for this holiday and for making your home so comfortable for visitors.
My best regards,
K.L

'Phyllis & John, your house is absolutely beautiful, in the most stunning location. We and our 2 children had such a wonderful time. The cottage is so lovingly decorated, and with 2 roaring fires it was truly so warm and cozy. We've stayed in quite a few cottages but this was definitely our favorite. Ohh and we loved the smell of the burning peat, it's so authentic and makes you feel like you've gone back in time. We loved the beach at Portnoo (and nearly got stuck on the little island there as the tide came in-in fact we ended up whipping our trousers off and making a run for it!). The views around the Glenveigh National Park are breathtaking as is the little road over to Maghery and its pub. We even picked our own mussels and found some local oysters thanks to Pat, who was lovely and very helpful. We had an amazing holiday and now a bit sad to be back home! Thank you so much for making it so enjoyable and letting us stay in your lovely house.'

what a wonderful cotttage in a prefect location. We have had a fantastic time and ventured out to Knock, Donnegal town and Cruit for the golf and spent time combing the beaches. Our Irish red setter loved going out exploring and our beautiful 17-month old daugher really enjoyed her first visit to Ireland. It will definately not be our last, that's for certain. Thank you for letting us enjoy this beautiful setting. We will recommend it to all our friends.

A stark contrast to a holiday house in Austrailia. The weather was daunting but we loved every minute of it. The house was our sanctuary; so welcoming and warm. Thanks so much for the couple of days, much appreciated. If you ever come to Austrialia we would very much like to see and entertain you

We had a very fine time at Maraghameelen in July and we can recommend it to everybody - especially with kids. The position of the house, the furnishing and design and last but not least the view will expect a wonderful holiday. We live on it till today.
