The amenities available to holiday makers visiting Donegal has helped to have Ireland named as top tourist destination for 2011, according to Frommer's , one of the world's leading travel guides.....Costal walks, castles, parks & Gardens , all of these plus the rugged headlands, especially Horn Head (only 10 mins drive away) are the most spectacular in Ireland... Doe Castle has been picked as one of the country's best castles.
Glenveigh Natioinal Park has also been chosen by Frommer's as having one of the best gardens to visit in Ireland.. It states.. " A castle and it's gardens stretch across a strangely barren valley, high in hills of Donegal, along the banks of Lough Veigh. .The sprawling park contains a grand statuary garden, a walled garden and a rhododendron-lined path that leads to the stunning view of the castle and lake.
Ards Forest Park , just off the N56 as you approach Creeslough village is also well worth a visit. as is the Dunlewy Lakes drive, during the summer months, the Dunlewy Center has traditional music sessions .
Errigal Mountain has always been a favourite of the climbers, and indeed more so, this year.
The Dunfanaghy / Portnablagh area
Dunfanaghy village has managed to preserve it's architectural and scenic beauty, together with a varied and unique array of natural and purpose built amenitieswhich has insured its continued popularity.
Outside the village is a Lake which is a wildlife sanctuary and home to a variety of duck, geese and swans, this lake also has excellent natural brown -trout fishing. within a five mile radius of Dunfanaghy village there are 175 recorded archaeological sites.... On the outskirts is the Workhouse, a Heritage & Cultural centre which run an exhibition about "Wee Hannah" telling the story of her survival of the famine. Also beside the Workhouse is the Maritime Heritage Community Playground which offers a handy respite for parents with young children.
also in the workhouse is a craft shop and a coffee shop , right next door is the famous "Gallery". and indeed a second Art Gallery called the "The Green Door" only a short distance away, very well worth a visit. Continuing in this end of the village is the excellent "Mill Restaurant".
In the main street there are a number of quirky little shops.. ie Irish Crafts, pottery, health foods, jewellery etc
lots of little cafes, a supermarket and of course a number of pubs, with both traditional and contemporary music
during the busy seasons. Look out for the farmer's market held early on Saturday morning.
Arnold's Hotel is well known in the area , both for it's restaurants and the Equestrian centre. Located on the outskirts of Dunfanaghy is Port na Blagh (harbour of buttermilk), sea-fishing trips can be arranged from here
Two beautiful white sandy beaches (blue flag) are just a few minutes drive away.... Killahoey & Marble Hill Strand... also within a few mins drive of the village is Dunfanaghy Golf Course .
Above will explain why Dunfanaghy is renowned as one of the most scenic holiday destinations on the Northwest Coast.

On arrival we were met by Kathleen the owner along with the housekeeper who was readily available throughout our stay. The property was made most welcoming with candles lit and goodies in the fridge. We enjoyed walking the beautiful beaches. Found the museum of the workhouse interesting and worth a second visit. Husband Paul made use of the nearby lake for fishing. On the downside, although this did not affect where we were staying, the area had been spoilt by too many second homes and unfortunately empty or not completed. |

Most of us talk about "getting away from it all" and perhaps don't always mean what we say. People often use language loosely and say "its home from home". Taking a holiday away from home particularly at Christmas can be a serious risk. However, this is a risk which paid off completely. My wife and I did get away from it all, body mind and spirit were completely refreshed, Faugher Court was our home from home, and Kathleen lived up to exactly what she said, and more. Every detail was covered from start to finish and the hospitality was exceptional. In fact this was a Christmas we shall always treasure for a variety of reasons and on a number of levels. I did not need or want for a thing as it was ALL provided and to the highest standard. I look forward to my return visit with anticipation. Fantastic host, beautiful house, amazing area, great relaxation and even beaches on Christmas Day for a walk to burn some calories!!! |
