The Donegal region

Dunfanaghy is located on Donegal's North West coast, specifically the west side of Sheephaven Bay. At the northern end of the village is a three-mile-long sandy beach known as Killahoey Strand. On May 2, 1943, a Flying Fortress of the USAAF on a ferry flight to Northern Ireland landed on the beach after running out of fuel. The crew were entertained in the local hotel and the aircraft refuelled and took off again (to be destroyed 6 weeks later over Germany).
South of Dunfanaghy are New Lake and Tramore Strand, a two-mile-long beach. New Lake was formerly a salt water marsh, but during the First World War, over-cutting of the grass on the surrounding sand dunes led to their destabilisation and the movement of the sand to block up the river. As a result, the marsh filled with fresh water and became a lake. The sand also silted up Dunfanaghy harbour. The New Lake became a haven for seabirds and is now a Special Protection Area. Also nearby is Sessiagh Lough, a small lough with a crannog in the middle.
Across the bay from Dunfanaghy is Horn Head, which shelters Dunfanaghy from the Atlantic Ocean and is an Irish Natural Heritage Area.
The centre of Dunfanaghy is a small square with a market house built in 1847 and a quay built in 1831 and formerly used to export corn. There are four churches: Clondehorky Old Church (now ruined), Dunfanaghy Presbyterian Church, Holy Cross (Roman Catholic) and Holy Trinity (Church of Ireland). The village is also home to a golf club, several art galleries and craft shops, and a museum, situated in part of a former workhouse, which describes the effects of the Irish Potato Famine on Dunfanaghy.

Dunfanaghy area

Dunfanaghy is close to Port-na-Blagh and Marble Hill, both of which also have popular beaches. Other sights in the vicinity include: Ards Forest Park, Ards (Capuchin) Friary, Glenveagh National Park, Doe Castle and the Derryveagh Mountains, the most prominent being Muckish Mountain and Mount Errigal.
Dunfanaghy Golf Club is an 18-hole true links course laid out in 1905 by six times winner of the British Open, Mr Harry Vardon.
Donegal from the saddle explores the most north-westerly part of the Emerald Isle taking you through an amazing variety of terrain, high into the mountains, gallop over isolated beaches and meander through regions where Irish is still the first language, this an essential equestrian experience for everyone with a love of horses and the outdoors
Festivals/Events - St Patricks Day Parade Dunfanaghy March, Seafood Festival Dunfanaghy May
Also August fair, Jazz Festival, Halloween Madness and New Years celebration

Thank you for a great stay, we have had a really lovely weekend at the house, Its so well equipped & handy to the village, couldn't have asked for anything more. Thanks again The Andrews Family, Bangor

We have very much enjoyed our visit to Portdale Cottage, the area is a beautiful part of Ireland and the people are very friendly. The children have enjoyed the beach, horse riding etc and the men have enjoyed the Guiness.
The house is just perfect, lovely and clean and i only wish we could stay longer. S. Costello & Family, Lancs.

Had a super holiday. Beautiful scenery, lovely beaches & piers for swimming and diving. House facilities could not be better. The Hayes Family, Westmeath

What a week we had, glorious sunshine every day, which meant we were on the beaches every day at some stage building sandcastles and getting thoroughly wet. In between hours we spent walking, golfing, cycling and lighting fire at Ards to cook sausages for lunch. Barbecued a couple of nights, ate at Carrig rua and the food was good. Enjoyed the house which was cosie and had all the facilities that were very much appreciated, BBQ, sunbeds, loungers, tables and chairs on the decking. See you again in 2009. The Evans & Martin families, Scotland.
