Take a glimpse into the fascinating life of Saint Patrick with a trip to scenic County Down.

With a history that covers over 7,000 years, Down is blessed with a wealth of heritage sites, one of the most famous of is Downpatrick, where Ireland's patron saint is reputed to be buried.

County Down is a picturesque spot filled mostly with low, rolling hills that contrast spectacularly with the rugged Mountains of Mourne and Slieve Donard, which rise dramatically to a height of 848 metres.

Strangford Lough, meanwhile, is an abundant nature reserve with seals, geese, terns and wildfowl nestling amidst its peaceful shores.

Dundrum, Co Down

Dundrum is a picturesque village on the south-east coast of County Down, Northern Ireland, 35 miles south of Belfast and 5 miles north of Newcastle.

Dundrum is also ideally placed as a base for walking and bird watching. No trip to Dundrum is complete without a visit to Dundrum Castle and a stroll along one of the many footpaths in the area. In addition to walking and bird watching within Dundrum, Murlough Nature Reserve and the Mourne Mountains offer even more options for outdoor pursuits and some of the best scenery in County Down and the whole of Northern Ireland.

In addition to the more strenuous activities, Dundrum also offers shopping and dining in a variety of shops and restaurants. The award winning restaurants in Dundrum include the Buck's Head Inn and the Mourne Seafood Bar.

Newcastle, County Down is famous for its sandy beaches and world renowned Royal County Down Golf Club (host of the 2007 Walker Cup)

With gourmet restaurants, charming pubs and exquisite shops, boutiques and galleries, there is something for everyone in Newcastle, County Down.

For the more adventurous, there are breathtaking hikes in the Mournes, numerous bike trails, superb fishing, tennis courts, swimming and amazing golf courses.

Take a leisurely stroll on the award winning Newcastle promenade and watch the tide ebb and flow or explore the nearby enchanting Tollymore Forest Park.

What ever you decide.... the Newcastle / Dundrum area is an ideal holiday getaway.

"The best self-catering house we have ever rented...ever."

As a family (2 adults with 2 children), we have taken my elderly parents with us to a cottage, around Easter time, each year for the past 6 or 7 years. We also go ourselves to a cottage at other times during the year, and make use of family timeshares. We have visited some great places and some lovely cottages. But...Mourne Escape surpasses every self-catering cottage we have ever rented. It is by far the most beautiful house, with a great enclosed garden, a remarkable location and view, and the most well-designed and presented interior. We read before we booked how good it was, but it was even better than we expected. It is hard to describe in detail, so please please look at their website,, and view the house gallery. It is just as you see it, but better. The quality of workmanship, the cleanliness, the extras the owners provide, all are more than you will see anywhere else.

Talking of the owners...Mervyn and Pauline did everything they could to make our stay special. They met us on arrival, and welcomed us to their home before showing us round. They explained how to use all the equipment, such as the Nespresso machine (and even provided coffee pods), the Apple TV, the Massage Chair (yes!)...the list goes on. They told us that during our stay, the electricity would be off for a few hours during one day, due to some local work; Mervyn and Pauline handed us a voucher for us to use at a local restaurant for that day! How kind was that? And because my Father uses an electric oxygen system, they contacted the electricity company to make the power cut as easy as possible.

So, its not just the house thats great. Its the whole package of house, location and service that made this our best Easter holiday yet.

Is it worth 5 Stars? We would give it 6 Stars if we could!

Thank you Mervyn and Pauline, for sharing your beautiful house with our family.

"A fantastic place to relax and unwind, a luxury property in a stunning setting"

Thank you for a great stay at Mourne Escape, we had such a lovely time, the house is so well equipped, we had everything we could possibly need and the children loved the garden. Would never tire of enjoying the views of the mournes from the windows while tucked up in from of the roaring fire. Looking forward to making a return trip in the summer to do some more walking and cycling, it really is the perfect base from which to explore the Mourne countryside. Many thanks.

"Exceptional accomodation would happily recommend it to anybody"

A luxurious modern 5 star house with everything you need for the stay. Walking distance to the fantastic beach, safe enclosed garden for small children.
It has all the essential non essentials!
We drove a short distance into Newcastle and enjoyed a walk up to the base of Donard and then enjoyed lunch in the town.
We spent the evening at the house cooking on the BBQ which is located just beside a “breeze house” gazebo - fantastic evening!

"Best accommodation we have ever stayed in. Definitely 5 star!!"

Supurb family weekend stay. A large, safe garden for the children to play. The covered outdoor eating area meant that we could BBQ, even in the winter. Bedrooms were clean and spacious. Modern, spacious and well equipt living/ kitchen/dining area with amazing views of the Mournes!
Walking distance to Murlough beach and Dundrum village.
Would recommend this for weekend breaks or holiday weeks. A luxury place to stay.

We stayed for a week in Mourne Escape and it is truly a wonderful property both inside and outside. We were met on arrival by Mervyn & Pauline, who showed us around the house and were both very helpful. The added touch of a welcoming basket of food essentials made us feel even more special and was a lovely gesture. The home itself is truly outstanding and only when you stay here can you fully appreciate the care and attention to detail throughout, from the wonderful living area with the full glass windows, to the fabulous kitchen, which had everything you could need. The bedrooms were luxurious in every way and the view from the master bedroom was most welcoming every morning. Pauline had also provided a travel cot for our youngest child which was great and meant we had one less item to pack. The snooker/pool table and lounge area upstairs was much loved by our two older children who could glady have spent the entire week inside the house. Outside the gardens are superb and as it is entirely closed in we could relax knowing the children could play outside in the vast garden. The area itself also has so much to offer and we had many days out enjoying the local attractions. It was truly a privilege to stay in this wonderful property and we hope to return next year. This home is truly one of a kind and we highly recommend it in every way.

"Superb property in a fabulous Location"

We spent 8 nights in this wonderful property, on arrival we were met my Mervyn and Pauline who were very welcoming and helpful by showing us around and how everything worked. The house is very relaxing with plenty of space for entertaining. Beautifully decorated with a high standard throughout. We were 6 adults, the weather was superb and we enjoyed the walks on the boardwalk and down to the beach within minutes from the house, the weather was exceptional 26-30 degrees we spent most evenings in the garden with dinner in the Pergola. The boys loved the pool table whilst the relaxing chair and sitting out on the balcony was the girlie thing! There is also an excellent surround system and a few late night movies were watched. We visited Newcastle, Seaforde Butterfly farm and climbed up to Dundrum Castle ruins. We also had a lovely meal in the Mourne Seafood restaurant. We were all chilled out when it was time to leave this home from home.. This house lives up to its name Mourne Escape!
