The South/Borders region

Often referred to as Scotland in miniature with its steep heather covered slopes, its rivers, lochs and sandy beaches and its ancient forests, this area has much to entice the visitor to return again and again. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, the area abounds in a variety of wildlife (RSPB reserve) and the spectacular gardens -Glenwham, Castle Kennedy, the Logan Botanical and Threave Castle Gardens- display a variety of plants normally found in the sub-tropics. The nearby town of Kirkcudbright is famous for its artists' colony and its galleries and exhibitions bring visitors flocking throughout the year.

Dumfries and Galloway / Gatehouse Of Fleet area

With its coastal setting and the many lochs and rivers in easy reach Gatehouse has long been popular with anglers and fishermen. For cyclists the area is part of the very extensive 7 Stanes Mountain Biking network though there are also many miles of quiet roads to suit every level. For those who prefer to walk there are local walks, woodland walks hills to climb and the Southern Upland Way.

The region has an impressive array of Arts and Crafts Festivals, music festivals (including The Wickerman Festival) and theatre. For more info on these visit: www.dgaa.net or www.visitdumfriesandgalloway.co.uk or www.south-west-events.com
