Home description

Carsebuie is a very comfortable holiday cottage furnished to a 4 star standard. Built from stone and slate around 200 years ago, the cottage has a lovely traditional feel. Situated part way up a hill, within a 1.5 acre garden with rambling roses, picket fence and moss-covererd stone walls, the views take in grazed farmland to the Galloway Hills and the ever changing colours of the trees in the woodland edging the burn (stream) below. Watch the wildlife from your cottage window. Red squirrels, brown hares, deer, pheasants, woodcock, curlews, buzzards, barn and tawny owls and a multitude of small birds from nuthatches to wagtails frequent this secluded 1.5 acre garden — even a golden eagle has been seen from this elevated spot. Within a moments walk you can reach the River Bladnoch, from which Scotland's southermost malt whisky takes it's name.

Perfect for all ages, this is a fantastic location for couples as well as groups of family and friends. An enclosed garden area is ideal for young children to run around and play safely, and dogs love it here too. The kids can unwind with table tennis and younger children can play in the children's play area in the games room across the courtyard. Most visitors use Carsebuie as a base for all that Galloway has to offer, but with books and games, TV/DVD, stereo CD player and broadband, there will be plenty to keep you entertained if you don't want to leave the cottage.

The South/Borders region

Just across the border from England the first village you come to is Gretna, famous for weddings. Travel east or further north towards Edinburgh and you are in the region known as The Borders; but follow along the coast road to the west in th direction of Ireland and you will be travelling through Dumfries and Galloway.

With 150 miles of rugged coastline to the south and west and a vast range of mostly uninhabited hills to the north, Galloway presents some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery. Our visitors love the clean air, big starry skies and wide, open spaces. Here you can experience a real sense of ancient history, with stone circles, iron-age settlements, castle ruins, and the cave dwelling of Scotland’s earliest Christian, St Ninian. Back to back farms, the rolling Galloway Hills, and the Galloway Forest Park ensure lush scenery, with virtually no signs of industrialisation.

Although the charm of this corner of Scotland is that much remains unchanged, a number of award winning enterprises have emerged for visitors to enjoy. Cream O’Galloway Ice Cream, and the Gem Rock museum in Gatehouse have become very popular attractions, as has the world class 7 Stanes mountain biking routes aimed at all levels from family groups to serious international competitors.

You cannot visit Galloway without taking in some of Scotland’s most beautiful coastline. Coastal walks, nature reserves and sandy beaches can be found from between 15 and 30 minutes drive. Wherever you hail from, be sure to explore the unspoilt stretches of the Solway Coast gently warmed by the Gulf stream.

Places to visit include: light houses; ancient monuments; gardens and tea rooms; antique and art galleries; various museums including gem rock museum and dolls house museum; cheese maker; ice cream maker; adventure playground; open farms and wildlife parks.

Dumfries and Galloway area

This part of Scotland is renowned for its great choice of activities for all ages.

The property is perfectly situated; you can walk in the surrounding countryside and immediately feel the sense of space and seclusion, but you are near enough to be able to pop into the local village shop for provisions and newspapers. The nearby market town of Newton Stewart offers a whole range of facilities and amenities from the leisure centre, cinema and tennis courts to numerous cafes and restaurants serving local produce and a wide variety of shops.

If you are looking for beautiful unspoilt sandy beaches there is a choice from less than 30 mins drive at Sandhead, Garlieston, Luce Bay and Port William.

Mountain biking is popular in the area with nearby Kirroughtree only 8 miles away and the famous 7 Stanes.

And you needn’t think the Highlands and Islands have all the fishing. There’s plenty to be had in Galloway. Fly fishing permits are available on various nearby lochs and rivers. Sea fishing and day boat trips can also be taken from Cairnryan, Stranraer and Port Patrick. .

For golfers there are over 30 courses including links in Dumfries and Galloway, usually in fabulous settings. Most towns have at least a 9 hole course, many 18 holes. You can tee off from Newton Stewart Golf Club, Wigtown and Bladnoch, and St Medan's all within an easy drive from Carsebuie. The courses are all well tended.

While the mountain bikers and cyclists will be kept busy (Dumfries and Galloway has 450 miles of signposted cycle routes), Hill walkers will be spoilt for choice, from the relatively gentle walk up Cairnsmore of Fleet to the more challenging 2800ft Merrick, with many scenic and fun walks in between. The Buchan and Curlywee, are just two of more than 20 hills and Lochs within the range. Don’t go without a camera to catch the wonderful views. If you prefer to walk rather than climb, the Southern Upland Way is only minutes away.

Also within 30- 60 minutes drive you will find the gardens of Claymoddie, Dunskey, Cally Palace, Castle Kennedy, Galloway House, Glenwhan, Logan Botanic and Threave. Most are open from late March to the end of October and may have tea rooms and often offer rare and unusual plants for sale, along with advice on how and where to plant. Though you may not associate Scotland with exotic plants, the warm air of the Gulf stream in the area allows palms, figs and plants in all manner of shapes, textures and colours to grow here.

A whole variety of other outdoor pursuits are available with horse riding, shooting, sailing, windsurfing, off road and tank driving and many more all for your enjoyment.
