About this location

The Devon region

Historic Exmoor offers visitors the chance to enjoy stunning landscapes by foot, bicycle, car or even horseback. The heather-clad moorland, home to the rare Exmoor pony, dominates North-East Devon and Western Somerset with some 267 square miles of National Park.

The inland terrain comprises of imposing peaks, rolling hills and wooded valleys, stark contrast to the dramatic sandstone cliffs and vast sand dunes that are found where the moors reach the coastline. Descending to rugged shores and golden beaches, the expanse of Exmoor finally gives way to the sea.

Dulverton

As the region's hotspot for cyclists and walkers, Exmoor offers over 700 miles of recognised footpaths and bridleways to explore, but you don't need to be Mark Beaumont to enjoy it. Visitors can make the gradual climb to Dunkery Beacon, Exmoor's highest point, or pick up the coastal trails that stretch from Minehead to Ilfracombe; with so much space, it's easy to beat the crowds and find that much sought after peace and solitude.

Where real moorland Exmoor sometimes gives way to softer wooded valleys, visitors will find the pretty villages of Simonsbath, Withypool and Winsford to explore; all with traditional country pubs serving local ales and cream teas. The delightful old moorland town of Dulverton also provides an excellent stop for well-deserved refreshments
