Old Travellers' Rest
About the home
Set in a wonderful location in the stunning Duddon Valley, this converted property is newly refurbished to a high standard. Its generous-sized living/dining room with its log-burning stove and large screen TV makes a comfortable retreat after a day out exploring the local fells and attractions. Sleeping up to 8 guests, several of the 4 bedrooms can be set up as either double or twin beds, giving extra flexibility. The cottage is also popular with smaller groups who enjoy the extra space at a discounted rate. The garden and outside seating area is surrounded by woodland for that secluded feel.
The Duddon Vallley is one of the hidden gems of the Lake District and was eulogised in several of William Wordsworth's poems. Wonderful scenery and abundant wildlife make this a special place to visit and yet the central Lakes - such as Windermere and Ambleside - are still easily accessible. The town of Coniston, with its lake and mountains, is less than half an hour's drive while a few miles away lies the historic market town of Broughton-in-Furness with its excellent shops and pubs.
Nearby ameneties include a small Post Office with groceries and souvenirs (2 minute drive) and the award-winning Newfield Inn (10 minutes drive) with a great choice of locally sourced dishes.

The Cumbria/Lake District region

The Lake District is world famous for its stunning mountain scenery and lake views. While the central area around Windermere and Ambleside is well-known and receives many visitors, those in the know head to less frequented spots, such as the south-western peninsula. Here the mountains meet the coast to give dramatic and unique vistas. With a wide range of leisure activiies, tourist attractions and historical sites, this part of the Lake District has so much to offer.
The Duddon Valley / Ulpha area
For guests staying at the Old Travellers' Rest, the whole of south-western Lakeland, including its coast, is on your doorstep. Family days out could include the South Lakes Wild Animal Park where you can see Amur and Sumatran Tigers being fed and see rhinos and giraffes roaming around. Muncaster Castle has extensive grounds, an adventure playground and an owl sanctuary. The Eskdale minature railway is always popular with both adults and children as is the Lakes Aquarium near Windermere. Or emulate the children in Arthur Ransome's "Swallows and Amazons" by taking a boat trip across Coniston Water.
Closer to your cottage, there are various walks to try, including the Wallowbarrow Gorge Walk, a visit to the Duddon River "beach" (take fishing nets and buckets for the kids) or enjoy the sun setting at Kiln Bank pass. Slightly further afield, enjoy a walk along the World Heritage dunes at Roanhead or take a trip far back in time at Swinside Stone Circle.
Leisure activities close by include golfing, fishing, canoeing and horse riding. During the summer local villages put on annual shows - worth a vist to experience local activities such as Cumberland wrestling, fell racing, stick making and sheep shearing.

Stayed with friend 26th Nov 'til 2nd Dec 2011. Wood burning stove ready to light and was delightful on a cold evening. The property is spacious and extremely comfortable with constant hot water and excellent central heating. As a 'get away from it all' retreat it is perfect. No phone signal or internet access, so no-one able to contact you!! (Although there is a pay phone if needed.) The location is perfect, with plenty of walks nearby (It's a bit hilly), and the local post office is 300 yards away if you need a newspaper or food essentials. There is a pub 3 miles up the valley at Seathwaite and Broughton-in-Furness is a 4 mile drive away, with a post office, greengrocery, bakery, cafe and restaurant, and 4 pubs. The comfortable bedrooms (4) including one en suite are tastefully decorated, and I have to say that we both slept fantastically well as it was so quiet. All in all, we had a brilliantly quiet and energizing time during our stay and I could not recommend it enough for anyone wanting a restful break. Thank you!! |
