The Dubrovnik Riviera/Islands region
Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities on the Croatian coast.
In the Middle Ages the Republic of Dubrovnik was an important rival of Venice. Many buildings in the old city centre testify of this glorious past and to its Venetian influence.
The walls of Dubrovnik girdle a perfectly preserved complex of public and private, sacral and secular buildings representing all periods of the city’s history, beginning with its founding in the 7th century. Particular mention should be made of the city’s main street, Stradun, the Prince's Palace, the church of St Vlaho, the Cathedral, three large monasteries, the Custom's Office and the City Hall.
The Republic of Dubrovnik was the centre of a separate political and territorial entity, and was proud of its culture, its achievements in commerce and especially of its freedom, preserved down so many tempestuous centuries.
Today, Dubrovnik is also a very lively city, with many things to do, both at day and night times. The coast nearby offers all sorts of activities and the town has many restaurants, bars and nightclubs. It has definitely been discovered by tourists, so be ready for the crowds.
The bustling walled city of Dubrovnik presents its annual summer festival (10 July - 25 august). A dramatic opening ceremony with fireworks and music is followed by theatre, concerts, opera and dance productions on a series of open-air stages throughout this fascinating city.
The musical part of the festival was initially imagined as a showcase for the best domestic composers, soloists and orchestras, but today it has grown to become a real review of top solo artists and ensembles from all round the world. Opera, ballet and dance are also welcome visitors.
Dubrovnik / Gruz area
The apartment is situated just above the Gruz port with the quay for ferries, boats and ships offering a wide range of daytrips to the surrounding islands: Mljet - the National park, Elaphite Islands, Korcula and boat-tours along the City Walls to the Old Town or Cavtat.
It takes only a 10-15 minutes local bus ride to the Old Town of Dubrovnik.
There are also near by: a bus terminal, supermarket, open-air grocery (green) market with a fresh fish offered daily, restaurants, travel agencies, exchange offices, rent a car offices, banks, pharmacies, bakery ...
How to get there
Travelling by plane is definitely the most comfortable and fastest way to reach Dubrovnik.
Dubrovnik airport is located in Ćilipi, 22 km away from the town and has excellent connections with regular commercial flights to all European centres and USA, both directs from Dubrovnik and thought connection flights with Zagreb. Regular flights are operated by British Airways and Croatia Airlines. During summer months numerous charter flights too.
