The Dubrovnik Riviera/Islands region

The city of Dubrovnik is the most southerly Croatian town. Its climate is Mediterranean, dry and sunny in the summer and mild in the winter. The average temperature is about 10°C in the winter and 26°C in the summer.Vegetation is typically Mediterranean with groves of cypress, myrtle, oleander and pine.

The name of Dubrovnik derives from the native Croatian word for an oak forest. Steep rocky coast, deep coves, sandy beaches, small fields, high mountains,1145 islands, reach vegetation and exceptionally clear sea make this region one of the most beautiful and impressive regions not only on the Croatian coast but also one of the best cultivated oases of the Mediterranean.

Just as George Bernard Show said: “Those who seek Paradise on the Earth should come to Dubrovnik”.

Dubrovnik / Dubrovnik Old Town area

A beautiful stone-built city of Dubrovnik ( Ragusa ) that we see today with all its monuments and its treasures was and is a centre of art and learning.Because of that Dubrovnik is called “Croatian Athens”.

According to legend, the history of Dubrovnik began with destruction of Epidaurum (a Romanised Greek settlement on the site of today’s Cavtat). The new town, named Ragusium from the 7th century to the 12th century grew under domination of Byzantium.By the end of the 12th century Dubrovnik had become an important trading centre on Mediterranean, later an independent city/state.

The 15th and 16th centuries were Dubrovnik golden age.Commerce,sea-trade and shipbuilding became the most important activities. In the 16th century Dubrovnik owned 200 large ships and her merchant fleet ranked third in the world. The beginning of the end came 1667 when Dubrovnik was devastated by an earthquake. The final coup de grace was dealt by Napoleon whose troops entered Dubrovnik in 1806 and announced the end of Republic of Dubrovnik.

Major sights:
Stradun - Dubrovnik’s wonderful pedestrian promenade - It is the venue of all popular feasts and processions but also the business street of the Old city.In the western end of the Stradun there is Franciscan Monastery with a third oldest European pharmacy and cloister one of the most beautiful late Romanesque structures in Croatia.Dominican Monastery contains impressive art collection which includes paintings from Dubrovnik finest Renaissance school.

The church of St.Blase (Vlaho, who is patron saint of Dubrovnik) completed in 1715 is a good example of baroque period. In the treasury of Dubrovnik's Cathedral are kept relics of St.Blase the works of local craftsmen. The old Port presents a peaceful and picturesque scene today with arsenal and beautiful renaissance fort of St. John which houses the Maritime Museum containing objects paintings and documents relating to a most important activity in the history of the city.

The Synagogue is the third oldest synagogue in Europe which is still in use and preserves its original 17th century furniture.
