The Dubrovnik Riviera/Islands region

Dalmatia alone has over 1,000 islands basking in the sun that, along with the coastal cities of Croatia, offer a wealth of art, architecture, culture and history.

Pula, at the tip of the Istrian Peninsula, is famed for its Roman antiquities, particularly the massive 22,000-seat Amphitheater, a short walk from the Monet’s dock. Mid-afternoon, the ship heads south on its overnight journey to Split . Split has one of the best preserved Roman edifices in existence: the massive Diocletian’s Palace, a fascinating complex where modern shops and offices are integrated harmoniously within the ancient and medieval ruins. The island of Hvar, with its popular harborfront promenade and picture-perfect views from the Fortress Spanjol, boasts acres of lavender fields outside of town.

The Old Town of Dubrovnik is a breathtaking sight, entirely surrounded by massive gray walls of stone. Inside, find a treasure trove of medieval art and architecture that has earned it a designation as a UN World Heritage Site. Cap off your visit with a stroll along the Stradun, the wide pedestrian promenade where you will discover many fine shops, cafes and galleries.

The sparsely inhabited island of Mljet offers lovely pine forests and jewel-like lakes, with the opportunity for a refreshing swim in crystal-clear waters. Korcula , a very walkable peninsula town which claims to be the birthplace of Marco Polo, contains many reminders of the rule of the Venetians. In Zadar , step ashore for a visit to the exceptional Museum of Church Art, the Archaeological Museum or the National Museum. Your week aboard concludes with a full day in Venice, offering as much to see and do for the frequent visitor as for a first-timer.

Dubrovnik / Slano area

SLANO, a village and small harbour in the bay of the same name; 37.5 km northwest of Dubrovnik. Farming, olive-growing, viniculture, fruit-growing, tobacco, herbs (sage, laurel, woodworm), fishing and tourism are chief occupations. Slano lies on the main road (M2, E65). Yachts can anchor in the small protected Banja cove. Anchoring-ground for larger yachts lies off the entrance in the cove, to the southwest of Cape Gornji.

The area of Slano was populated already in the prehistoric period (ruins of a hill-fort and tumuli on the nearby hills) and in the ancient times (a Roman castrum on the hill Gradina; early Christian sarcophagi, today exhibited in front of the Franciscan church). In 1399 Slano fell under the rule of the Dubrovnik Republic; once the duke's seat (duke's palace, reconstructed at the end of the 19th c.). The summer villa of the Ohmucevic family is situated in the vicinity. The present Franciscan church was built in the 16th century; the main altar is adorned with a polyptych by Lovro Dobricevic. The parish church of St. Blaise from 1407 was reconstructed in the Baroque period. - The churches of the Annunciation and of St. Peter, both dating back to the 13th century, are located in Banja.

If you come to Slano you have a lot of place to visit. You have posibility to go-Dubrovnik (30 minutes from Slano, famous old town and one of the most beautiful cities of the world-during the summer there is a Dubrovnik´s Summer Festival - there is a lot of cultural events), you have every day organized excursions to four Elafit ´s Island (wonderful nature, beautiful beaches..), island of Mljet (national park), river Neretva (near town Metković - driving in little boats, wonderful nature, good restaurants), half-island Pelješac (famous with its wine, town Ston has the longest walls after Chinese Wall, their recovering lasts) to Montenegro (our neighborhood country), visit Mostar (2 hours from Slano - famous old town in oriental style and famous old bridge which was destroyed by Serbian occupators), Sarajevo (5 hours from Slano - oriental town with bosnian specialities and specific culture).

You can play volleyball, hire pedalins and meet little bays in bay of Slano. There is also rent of funky cars - old cars which are made in funny cabrio cars. This bay is perfect for calm holiday with your family, there is few restaurants and cafes where you can meet friendly people. There are 3 shops, post office, ambulance and bus connection with Dubrovnik is good (every 30 minutes). Every Saturday is some cultural event in Slano.
