About this location
The Dalmatia region
Dubrovnik is city on the Adriatic Sea and one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean. Dubrovnik is among the ten best medieval walled cities in the world. A characteristic of Dubrovnik is its defensive stone walls that have surrounded and protected the citizens of the afterward proclaimed maritime city-state of Dubrovnik. Today's intact city walls, constructed mainly during the 12th -17th centuries, run an interrupted course of approximately 1.940 metres and reach a maximum height of about 25 metres. Walls run from four to six meters thick with the system of turrets and towers. The patron saint of the city is Sveti Vlaho (Saint Blaise), whose statues are seen around the city. The famous monuments in Dubrovnik are Sponza Palace, Rector's Palace, St. Saviour Church and Franciscan Monastery with old pharmacy, the third oldest European pharmacy which dates back to 1317 (and is the only one still in operation today). The annual Dubrovnik Summer Festival is a 45 day-long cultural event (from July 10 till August 25) with live plays, concerts and dramas.
Dubrovnik has a borderline humid subtropical and Mediterranean climate with dry summers and mild, wet winters. Typically, in July and August daytime maximum temperatures reach 28 °C (82 °F), and at night drop to around 23 °C (73 °F). More comfortable, perhaps, is the climate in Spring and Autumn when maximum temperatures are typically between 20 °C (68 °F) and 28 °C (82 °F). Sea temperature in July and August reach 25 °C.
