The Dubrovnik Riviera/Islands region
.A ride through the picturesque surroundings of Dubrovnik is a real delight, either by land or sea, with so many typical red roofed villages hidden in the middle of luxuriant vegetation and green islands inviting for leisure and dolce far niente. The vicinity of Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina and other former Yugoslav countries represents an additional attraction of Dubrovnik if interested in the Balkans, its complex history and cultural, religious and natural varieties. Even a one day trip is enough to feel the differences and to have a better comprehension of the recent history.
Dubrovnik is situated in the southernmost part of Croatia, very close to Montenegro on one side, and Bosnia-Herzegovina on the other side. Due to such a geographical position, its history has always been very turbulent and its role in the larger context of the Balkans very important. Such conditions have made it a place of great heritage, both historical and cultural. Dubrovnik is best known for its impressive ramparts, unique in the world, providing for the defense of its people in the past and constituting an inevitable tourist attraction today. Dubrovnik in itself is an ideal place for a one or two week escapade, whether you are looking for leisure holidays, historical knowledge, cultural events, sports activities. It is a living monument as a whole, boasting gothic, renaissance and baroque features; museums and collections; art galleries and studios; and jewelry shops, along with Mediterranean food and wine that can be tasted in numerous little places scattered around the town’s centre
