Home description

This is a spacious apartment in a prestigious block, used frequently by us as our holiday home in Dublin so we have equipped it, not so much as a normal rental place but more as a home from home and we hope that you will find everything you need here to make your holiday in Dublin perfect. The minimum rental period is now one week as I travel over from England to get it ready for your stay. There is no fixed start day.

No extras on top of the rent which has gone down, not up, on '08 prices, to help those with a struggling pound! Provision of linen and towels included. Please note that the maximum number of people staying is two and I am unable to make an exception to this.
The floor area including the balcony is 102 sq m or 1,098 sq ft.

The apartment comprises

• Entrance hall with video phone
• Cloakroom with Basin and WC
• Fully equipped kitchen
• Large sitting room with eating area
• Double bedroom with superking bed
• En suite bathroom with Bath, over bath shower, basin and WC

There is a balcony from which you can look eastwards towards the sea which is just a over a mile away at Sandymount Strand. I can't claim 'sea view' however as this is hidden by trees most of the year.

This is ideal for couples wanting a city break, visiting academics or business people needing a quiet and comfortable place to stay close to the centre and the universities and for anyone wanting to escape hotel life and have their own space. Our flexible start dates allow for month long stays or weekly stays starting any day of the week, subject to availability. The maximum stay is two months.

NTL/Chorus Wifi Broadband is installed; this, and all utilities (there is no telephone) are included in the rent quoted.

It is five minutes away from RTE at Montrose, St Vincent's Hospital and the UCD campus at Belfield. For tourists' Dublin - it is within walking distance (a mile and and half) from, arguably, the ‘best’ area of Dublin, St. Stephen’s Green and Grafton Street and is very well served by buses, virtually outside the door which take you there in approximately 10 minutes.

Available for breaks from one week to 2 months. Linen and towels are provided AT NO EXTRA CHARGE and a landline telephone can be installed for longer lets (over 4 weeks) if required and if I am given advance notice as I have to get it connected. Rental and calls extra, as per billed by telephone company.

The East Ireland / County Dublin region

10 minutes bus ride from the apartment takes you to St Stephen's Green and Grafton Street (you can walk there through Georgian Streets in under half an hour). This is where the best clothes shopping is. Stay on the bus if you want to cross the Liffey and explore the O'Connell Street area. Visit the Hugh Lane Gallery, the wonderful Gate Theatre (where you will never see a bad performance in my experience) or go round the corner to the Joyce Museum.

Visit the National Gallery of Ireland at Merrion Square, wander through the historic Trinity College and see the famous library (The Long Room with the Book of Kells) there, take in a concert at the National Concert Hall or visit the Parliament buildings in Kildare Street and next to that the History and Natural History sections of the National Museum. On your way, stop off at the wonderful pubs in Baggot Street and Merrion Row where you may catch some live performances. Drop in at the Shelbourne on the Green, for cocktails or a special meal.

Explore the history of Dublin with a visit to Christchurch Cathedral, Kilmainham Gaol or Dublin Castle. Take one of the many themed guided walks around the city which usually involve a pub or two on the way! You will find details in the tourist office in St Andrew's Street. Wander around the Temple Bar area for lively bars and quirky shops. Taste a special piece of Irish history at Guniness' Storehouse which takes you through the brewing process or if whiskey is your thing, visit the Old Jamieson Distillery.

Take a tram ride towards Phoenix Park - the largest city park in Europe (which includes Dublin Zoo), stopping off to visit the Museum of Decorative Arts at Collins Barracks on the way. There are so many museums and art galleries in Dublin that you would need weeks to visit them all and I cannot list them all here.

From the apartment, the sea at Sandymount is within walking distance but if you want to further explore the coast and don't have a car, take the Dart Railway north to Howth and Malahide (drop in on the Castle here) or south to Blackrock, Dun Laoghaire and beyond. For spectacular views climb Killiney or Dalkey hills and look out over the Bay. Enjoy the wonderful beach at Killiney or take a boat from Dalkey out to an island for seal watching in the summer. Visit Bull Island for its bird sanctuary.

If you have a car you may want to do longer trips and it is amazing, with the new roads in Ireland, just how far you can go on a day trip (subject to avoiding rush hour in and out of Dublin!). For horse racing fans there are four courses near Dublin – Leopardstown, Fairyhouse, Punchestown and The Curragh. Golfers may want to head for Portmarnock or the K Club. A relatively short drive south will find you in the mountains of County Wicklow, perfect for walking and sightseeing. (Glendalough is about an hour’s drive). West of Dublin, visit Castletown House, the National Stud and the Japanese Gardens in Kildare. Go north for the prehistoric sites at Tara and Newgrange. The Midlands and the lakes of Westmeath are within a two hour drive from Dublin. A little further on and you can explore the many towns and villages on the Shannon. You can even spend a long day and drive right over to County Galway and wander around Connemara, or a little further south exploring the Burren in County Clare. Of course you can travel to a lot of these places on bus tours from Dublin. I try to keep up to date with leaflets about some of them in the apartment but the tourist office in Andrew Street (round the corner from Grafton Street) has masses of information and will help you with bookings.

Dublin / Dublin 4 area

There is local food shopping in Donnybrook and Ballsbridge, the nearest shops being about 5 minutes walk away. There are many local excellent restaurants, Kielys (Thai cuisine), Poulot's, Roly's Bistro and the Donnybrook Fair Café . In addition there are specialist shops which do delicious ‘take home’ cuisine.

The Merrion Shopping Centre (which includes a Tesco supermarket), St. Vincents Hospital, the Royal Dublin Society, Elm Park Golf Course and University College Dublin are all 5 to 15 minutes walk away and the Dart railway runs from Sandymount (about a 15 minute walk down Ailesbury Road). You can walk to the beach at Sandymount in about 20 minutes or take a 5 minute stroll to Herbert Park (public tennis courts, duck ponds etc.).
On Thursdays there is a farmer's market (10 to 4) 3 minutes walk down the road. Here you can buy cheese, organic fruit, vegetables & herbs, juices, breads, organic & free range eggs, olives, organic meats and locally designed crafts from one of the 25 stalls there. If you like hunting for treasures then try Blackrock Market at the weekends and for paintings, many artists sell their works on Sundays from the railings in Merrion Square.

Some of the buses within easy walking distance are 10, 15X, 25X, 32X 39X, 46 46A, 46B, 46X, 49X, 50X, 58X, 66X, 70X, 116, 117, 145, 746. In addition the Air Coach, to and from Dublin Airport runs approximately every 15 minutes throughout the day.

Further details indoors:
There is an amazing amount of light in this third floor apartment so you are stuck immediately by this, the spaciousness and the wonderful views from its large picture windows and balcony. Nine foot ceilings, a rarity in modern apartments, add to the sense of space.

The kitchen is very well equipped and includes a dishwasher and microwave and a good sized freezer. A table by the window provides seating for two looking out over the Georgian houses on Angelsea Road or you can take your meals at the dining table next door in the sitting room . As this is our own holiday home, we leave a selection of 'dry' goods in the cupboard so as well as supplies of tea, coffee, sugar etc. there are also things like rice and pasta as well as all the basic extras we use in the kitchen like washing up liquid, cling film, foil etc. We just ask that visitors replace what they use.

The sitting room has a dining area and plenty of comfortable seating. There is multichannel TV and Broadband access (you need your own computer to plug into this or a wifi card). There is a piano which you are welcome to play, books in the bookcase to borrow (but please don't take them away!) and an open fire on which you can burn special smokeless logs, available locally. The balcony is off the sitting room and looks over Dublin towards the sea. The whole apartment benefits from early morning sunshine as it faces East.

The large bedroom has a super king-sized bed and plenty of storage space. The bed has two single matresses which are made up with single duvets. The new matresses are of differing firmness to suit the hard/soft preferences of couples. Off the bedroom is a fully equipped bathroom with an over the bath shower. The apartment also has a cloakroom off the hall with basin and loo and this also houses a washing machine. Iron and ironing board are also provided.

The whole apartment is centrally heated except in high summer and benefits from constant hot water. It is equipped with a sensitive smoke alarm.

Further details outdoors:
This is in an exclusive residential complex adjacent to Donnybrook and Ballsbridge villages. There is video monitored visitor parking available if required (no extra charge). The complex has large lawned areas and flower beds to enjoy so in the summer you can take a folding chair from the apartment and go and sit in the sun with your book. This large garden is, of course, shared with other residents of the block (but hardly any of them ever use it!).

There are steps up the main entrance but this is otherwise suitable for the elderly or infirm as a lift takes you straight to the apartment.

Dublin is a noisy place, especially closer to the centre. This is all a 10 minute bus ride away and although the apartment block is conveniently near to a main road the trees around the block deaden the traffic noise and create a feeling that you are in a haven of calm amongst the hustle and bustle. So, zero bustle within our grounds, but plenty of buses nearby!

Further details

The apartment is equipped as home from home and as such the food cupboards are stocked with the basics. If you finish anything you are asked to replace it for the next person. There are shops close by which stay open late.

Please note that this is NOT a serviced apartment so if you are staying longer than a week you may change and wash your own linen and towels from the supplies provided, as you require, and undertake maintenance cleaning. It will be totally cleaned and made ready for your arrival by me and as with all self-catering establishments not charging a cleaning fee, you are asked to keep and vacate it in a clean and tidy condition!

Regrettably, pets are not allowed in this building but I am sure a budgie or canary would not be objected to by the other residents and certainly, not by me! THIS IS A NON SMOKING APARTMENT. This means that if you are a smoker, this is not the place for you as I have reluctantly decided to exclude even people who promise to smoke outside. The smell lingering in the wardrobe from smoker's clothes is unpleasant for future guests.

This is a quiet building with many retired people so you are requested to be considerate of your neighbours. Parties are not permitted and you are asked not to shout over the balcony, talk loudly if returning late at night, or play excessively loud music at any time. No more than two people can stay in the apartment.

Conditions

A deposit is payable on booking (€150 euros for a week's stay) and a holiday rental agreement is submitted to you for signature. The balance of rent is due 8 weeks before the start of your holiday. Payment to be made in Euros by bank to bank transfer or by an Irish bank cheque.

NOTES:

STERLING AND DOLLAR PRICES FLUCTUATE WITH EXCHANGE RATES SO THE DISPLAYED PRICE, IN CURRENCY OTHER THAN EUROS, IS ONLY AN ESTIMATE. THE ULTIMATE PRICE IS THE EURO QUOTE WHICH DOES NOT CHANGE. THIS YEAR IS GREAT FOR DOLLAR PEOPLE AS RATES FOR 2009 ARE WELL DOWN ON 2008!

Maximum number of people staying is 2. Subject to availability, you can start your holiday any day of the week.

Minimum stay now one week except for Christmas and New Year weeks. I cannot make an exception to this as I travel from England to do a changeover. You can of course stay for less time but the charge is as for a week.

I am only rarely able to take 'last minute' bookings, for the reason above so trips must be planned at least a week in advance, usually more.

For Christmas and New Year the cost is last year's price of €1000 for a week to start on whichever day you want, subject to availability but you can stay 5 nights for €800.

Longer stays are negotiable throughout the year. A four week stay, not including the peak weeks, is discounted and is €2,550- €2,660. This of course includes all utilities (landline telephone excepted, which would have to be reconnected by advance arrangement)
