About this location

The Province of Leinster region

Dublin Barge Hire is located on the south side of the river Liffey between Sir John Rogerson's Quay and Pearse Street in Dublin City Centre. The barge Scéal Eile is moored in the marina at Waterways Visitors Centre, Grand Canal Quay, Dublin 2. The barge is in view of the Bord Gais Energy Theatre which is incredibly stunning at night as various sculptors illuminate the area making the array of bars, restaurants and cafes look inviting as places to sit, eat and drink while soaking up the visually appealing setting.

Grand Canal Square, is an exciting new urban space in Dublin's Docklands which opened in 2007. So if it is innovative landscape that interests you, Grand Canal Square is one of the largest paved public spaces in Dublin city allowing on occasion outdoor concerts and performances staged in the vicinity making your stay a special one.

Grand Canal Dock is only minutes from the city centre, and is served by an extensive public transport network. This includes intercity trains, a fast commuter train service (Dart), Dublin Bus services and a light rail network (Luas). Dublin Barge Hire is located near Grand Canal Dock Station which links to Bray/ Greystones or Malahide/Howth so it could not be easier to hop on a dart/train and visit Malahide for the day or if its walking your after - take a dart to Bray and walk the fabulous coastline to Greystones and get the Dart back to Dublin City Centre.

Remember you have your own personal mode of transport that you can freely move through our 200 year old locks giving you a personal experience of times gone by! Gain first hand experience of cruising your own barge, traveling from Grand Canal Dock, westward up the attractive tree-lined Grand Canal to Percy Place. The cruise time is approx. 2 hours. So if its a family holiday you are after you don't have far to go to entertain the children and aid their curious minds. Simply step onto the back deck, turn the ignition on and drive your very own barge whilst engaging the kids in something entirely new and unique to the city. Barging on Scéal Eile is ideal family holiday entertainment.

Use the barge to cruise in the Dock during the off peak season. Drive and moor your boat outside Il Valentino cafe and treat everyone to a morning coffee and pastry. Take a leisurely spin around the Outer and Inner Basin. Cruise to the Bord Gais Energy Theatre and dine at the fine restaurants all based beside the water front and then return to the mooring in the Inner Basin Marina. Keep an eye out for the prehistoric looking Comorant that often dives swiftly into the water to catch its prey or stands motionless with its wings in full span as it patiently dries itself.

The Outer Basin is also used for water sports. Check out Surfdock Watersports and maybe challenge yourself to Stand-up Paddleboarding, Wind Surfing or Wake Boarding. They have great summer camps for the kids too!

A short stroll from the barge is the Chimney Park playground so if the children are small and energetic why not grab a coffee and relax while the children burn off some energy. Also, nearby the playgound is Hanover Quay Garden designed by Diarmuid Gavin.

Sandymount Beach is a 30 minute walk away (3.3 km)or you could hire bikes from the Dublin city cycling website. There is a park and playground en route just in case you have little people in tow who are in need of a rest half way through their walk!!.

We are also located approximately 10 minutes from Shelbourne Park (Greyhound Track)and the music venue The O2 is in walking distance as is The Aviva Stadium.

There are plenty of markets around too. The Point Village Market is running every weekend. And the Central Square Gourmet Food Market in Spencer Dock may very well tempt you every Wednesday from 11.30am to 2pm. Every Thursday there is a food market at Mespil Road too.
