The Crete region
Crete is one of the largest Greek islands, with a great climate. Spring and Autumn days are long and sunny with cooler evening and the summer is hot with pleasant sea breezes. It offers a relaxing holiday but with plenty of activities.
The island has beautiful beaches and wonderful mountain scenery, with typical Greek villages just off the highway. Crete has a long history of invasion and many historical sites to visit, possibly the best known is Knossos , home of the Minotaur.
20 minutes from the house is the ancient hilltop city of Hellenistic Aptera, with amazing Roman water cisterns and a Turkish fort with fantastic views over Souda Bay.
There are wonderful, peaceful monasteries and churches all over Crete, the nearest on Akrotiri, 45 minutes away. Crete is a great place for a walking holiday and it is possible to walk the mountains gorges - the Samaria Gorge being the most famous, but smaller local gorges near to Drapanos.
Spring and Autumn offer superb opportunities to see the wild flowers and Cretan bird life.
Drapanos area
Drapanos is a small Greek village, well placed for beaches and other local villages and 45-50 minutes from the lovely towns of Chania and Rethimno. Chania is the old capital, with a beautiful Venetian harbour and plenty of great shops, cafes, tavernas, cinemas , as well as bowling and a water park.
Rethimno is another lovely town, with a Turkish Fortress, great beaches and a lovely market on Thursday and Saturday mornings.
10 minutes drive from the house will bring you to the beaches and holiday facilities of Alymirida, with sea fishing, watersports, shops and places to eat. 10 minutes further on is the large village of Kalyves , again long, quiet beaches and all the facilities of a town - banks, supermarkets and agents to book excursions futher afield.
There are more beaches at Georgioupolis, 40 minutes by car and Marathi Beach on the Akrotiri is an unspoilt beach with resident geese and some good tavernas.
For the foodies, there are excellent mountain village tavernas, easily accessible with the opportunity of a gentle walk to get rid of any excess!!
How to get there
Direct charter flights May until October from UK and most Northern European countries to Chania Airport which is approximately 40 minutes from Drapanos by taxi or car hire.
Easyjet fly from UK, Germany and Italy to Heraklion which is 1 and a half to two hours drive from Drapanos.
Many charter companies fly from UK and Northern Europe to Heraklion. It is our experience to check all options re flights often charter is cheaper nearer departure whereas with Easyjet it is normally cheaper to book well ahead.
Schedule airlines fly via Athens to Chania and Heraklion throughout the year.
All major car hire companies operate from Chania and Heraklion airports.
Local car hire companies in Crete include Kalives Travel, Flisvos and Autocar. The local companies are all competitive and worth getting quotes from. They will arrange for you to collect car at either airport or deliver to Drapanos.
