The County Down region

County Down, with its largest town Bangor, is one of the six counties that forms beautiful Northern Ireland. The impressive Mourne mountains rise from the coast to heights of 800 metres and more, ideal for hiking enthusiasts. Overall it is a place of rugged coastal scenery with a climate not unlike that of mainland UK, sheltered as it is from the full force of the Atlantic winds.

Downpatrick / Ardglass area

Ardglass is a fishing harbour and boasts a small marina and famous 18-hole golf course - Ardglass Golf Course. It is an area of splendid beauty and has much to offer the outdoor enthusiast. The area has many golf courses to choose from - Downpatrick, Ardglass and Bright - all around 10-15mins drive away and Royal County Down Golf Course is 30 mins away.

Fishing and sailing are available in Ardglass itself or also in nearby Strangford (10-15mins away by car). Also in Strangford, for the more adventurous at heart, scuba diving is available at Strangford Loch.

For those interested in the history of the area there is an abbey, St. Patrick's cathedral and grave. Castleward is a National Trust property that boasts a large manor house, a working farm and Victorian play room and Victorian laundry. Castleward is found in Strangford, only 15mins away. Castleward Forest Park is a great place to experience the outdoors and the nearby Tullymurray Forest Park - 20-25mins drive - offers orienteering, fishing, walking, and cycling.

Horse riding is a 15min drive in Downpatrick and for those with a love for equestrian sport will enjoy Downpatrick horse racing, also 15mins away.

And to top off a brilliant list of activities, you have Bishop's Court Race Track that offers motorbike and car racing (10mins) and a beach (also 10 mins)
