The County Down region
County Down is remarkable for its many low, beautifully cultivated hills or drumlins. However, in south County Down, the rugged Mountains of Mourne, formed from stark granite, offer a striking contrast to this arable land. Here, Slieve Donard rises from the sea to a height of 848 metres. Slieve Croob tops another group of hills in the centre of County Down. Both ranges provide excellent opportunities for hillwalking, both for novices and the more experienced. There are also great outdoor pursuits centres with activities such as abseiling, mountain-boarding, bouldering, archery, canoeing and sea-kayaking. Ask us for website details.
To the east, the Ards Peninsula forms a barrier between the sea and an almost land-locked Strangford Lough, designated an Area of Special Scientific Interest. See www.strangfordlough.org for detalis.
With a history spanning 9,000 years, County Down has many important archaeological sites and ancient monuments, together with attractions for the sportsman, the climber and the walker.
Downpatrick area
Downpatrick is the administrative centre of Historic Down District, and with a population of 10,113 has the highest populous in Down. There are many sites to visit in this town and its surrounds.
Downpatrick is home to Down County Museum located in the old gaol, Down Cathedral (with the final resting place of Saint Patrick, along with Saints Brigid and Colmcille) and St Patrick's Visitor Centre. Nearby are the ancient sites of Inch Abbey, Struell Wells and the Mound of Down.
There are many cultural, music and arts festivals in the area including the St Patrick's Day Parade in March, Castleward Opera and the Opera Fringe Festival in June, Celtic Fusion music festival in August and the Viking Festival in September. Visit www.downdc.gov.uk to check for events.
Downpatrick Race Course is home of the Ulster National, and plays host to a series of meetings throughout the year.
There many fun activities for all the family in Co.Down and also great restaurants, cafes and pubs, three of which are just two miles down the road from the cottages.

This cottage has its own garden area, with an old horse walk, ash trees and uninterrupted views across fields to nearby Castlemahon Mountain, which is topped with forest and with grazing for sheep lower down. This hill is accessed by a waymarked path and is well worth the climb to see the stunning views of County Down from the Mourne Mountains in the south, right up Strangford Lough to the Antrim Hills in the north. There's even a glimpse of Scotland!
