The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Lot et Garonne region
This is a really beautiful countryside of rolling hills and farmland dotted with farms and houses and yet within easy distance of the local towns including the beautiful medieval town of Issigeac, the Bastide towns of Castillonnes, Eymet, Miramont-en-Guyenne, Villereal and the pretty town of Lauzun all with good restaurants and weekly farmers markets.
We are on the edge of the Bergerac vineyards, with Duras, Bordeaux and Cahors vineyards within striking distance, giving untold opportunities to visit, taste and buy wine.
Bergerac is some 30 kilometers north, (Bergerac airport is served via Stanstead by Ryan Air, Bristol and Southampton by FlyBE), and Villeneuve-Sur-Lot 30 kilometers to the south. Both these larger towns have good shopping facilities, superb restaurants and weekly street markets.
There are many places of historical interest well worth a visit. The local Bastide towns of Eymet, Monflanquin, Villereal and the beautiful villages of Monpazier, Issigiac (with its medieval houses and bishop’s palace), Pujols and Penne d’Agenais with its windy streets and church at the summit of the hill are all within easy drive.
These Bastide towns, so characteristic of the area were constructed as new towns in the 13th and 14th centuries, by both the English and the French when much of the area was English before and during the 100 years war.
There are many interesting places to visit on day trips. St Emillion, famed for its wine, is really beautiful and well worth a visit. There are also the renowned prehistoric sites in the eastern Dordogne, cave paintings at Lascaux, especially, roc St Christophe and various old cave dwellings, and many other minor caves with wall paintings, etc. There are also the very pretty towns of Sarlat, Domme set on top of a hill, Roc Gageac on a cliff beside the river and the large medieval castles at Beynac and Biron, etc.
Douzains area
Enjoy the weekly market in the Bastide town of Castillonnes the small local town only some 5 Kilometers away. It provides all the necessities of life with two small, but well stocked, supermarkets, bakers, butchers, cafes and other small shops as well as a cinema, (which quite often shows the latest films in English), and several excellent restaurants, including Les Remparts, serving exceptional food.
The area offers many restaurants and bars: Castillonnes has 5 restaurants with a variety of menus, Lalandusse (2km) has a small restaurant, Issigeac (12 km) has 5 restaurants and Eymet (14km) has 7 restaurants.
There are 4 golf courses and a driving range within 30 minutes drive. Chateau des Vigiers, 18 hole course (at Monestier), Villeneuve Sur Lot Golf Club, 18 hole course (at Castelnaud), Tombeboeuf, 9 hole course (at Tombeboeuf), Chateau les Merles, 9 hole course (at Mouleydier). There is also a Driving Range at the Centre de Golf Bergeracois (at Bergerac).
There is a good riding school in the next village of Serignac Peboudou, only some 5 minutes away, and there is a donkey farm in the village where children can have rides or enjoy a short run around in a small cart pulled by a donkey. Tennis courts are available in the nearby towns of Castillonnes and Lauzun.
The Dordogne River is very good for fishing, canoeing and other activities. There are also many local facilities for riding, golf, tennis and walking. There is a lake at Lougratte some 6 kms away, which has a small beach, pedalos, canoes etc and is very popular with small children, with plenty of other children to keep everyone occupied. You can picnic on the grass or under the trees
