The Orkney Islands region
Kringla is only 10-15 mins drive from Orkney's World Heritage Site, christened the Heart of Neolithic Orkney. This includes the neolithic settlement of Skara Brae, Ness of Brodgar, Maeshowe, the Ring o' Brodgar and the Stones of Stenness. There are also the less well-known sites in the area, The Watch Stone, the Barnhouse Stone and the Barnhouse Settlement.
Also convenient for both the farm museums, the Brough of Birsay and the Brough of Gurness.
There are unlimited beaches all within easy reach of Kringla. Enjoy the beautiful sandy beaches of Skaill or Aikerness, or explore the rock pools at the Point of Buttquoy, or walk along the breathtaking cliffs at Yesnaby. Where ever you choose to go there is always plenty of wildlife. In the spring and summer the glorious wild flowers are breathtaking, sea pinks, squill and bladder campion are abundant. It is great fun to hunt for the colourful puffins or watch the seals sunbathing on the rocks.
Orkney is a great place for a walking holiday. There are an abundance of breathtaking walks over moorland, along beaches, on top of cliffs or quiet tracks. What ever your level of fitness you will find something suitable.
Orkney is internationally renowned for its excellent bird-watching, but the sheer number of birds which the islands support makes it one of the best all-season destinations. Orkney is one of the best places in the United Kingdom for seabirds with some 21 breeding species. The RSPB owns, leases or manages over 8,000 hectares of land in Orkney. Visitors to Orkney will be rewarded at any time of the year, with spectacular sightings of rare or shy birds, in beautiful and peaceful surroundings. The variety of habitat and the richness of the farmland, heather moorland, and coastal waters provide ideal breeding territory for a host of species, and there is always something of interest, whatever the season. Kringla is an ideal location for bird watching being central to many of the RSPB reserves and the bird city of Marwick Head.
Storm watchers often come to Orkney to witness and photograph the wild seas in winter. The sheer power of the waves is unforgettable. Kringla is the perfect cosy haven to come back to after a day battling against the elements! There is also opportunity to see the Northern Lights.
Kringla is also very convenient for all the trout lochs. Most of the lochs in Orkney offer free fishing for wild brown trout. Dave is a keen fisherman and is always happy to give advice to first time anglers or the seasoned fisherman. He will help find the best boats and guide you to the best location for the direction of wind or cloud cover. He can also advise on sea angling.
Orkney has a vibrant music scene. The Folk Festival and St Magnus Festival attract artistes and visitors from around the world. The local talent is second to none and a visit to a local concert or Harvest Home is a real treat.
Dounby is a small village in the heart of the West Mainland of Orkney. It is very convenient for a stress free holiday.
There is a grocery shop, a butcher(local beef, pork and lamb), post office, hairdresser, chemist and hotel all within a few minutes walk from Kringla. At the primary school in Dounby there is a playpark and tennis court.
Visitors to the area frequently comment on the friendly people who make you feel very welcome.

"Everything we could have asked for and more."
Kringla is clean, well equipped, comfortable and cosy. There were some lovely touches such as welcome goodies of, free range eggs, fudge, shortbread & more. Kay provided us an email of what was happening on the island daily and gave us some great tips for visiting places. The property is centrally located to access everything on Orkney. There was even a great area to walk our dog very close by. The pub in the village was dog friendly.
I am pleased you found Kringla so convenient and that it exceeded your expectations! I hope your short visit has inspired you to return.

"Excellent base on Orkney in a well appointed, comfortable apartment."
Dounby is well placed on Mainland being a short car journey from all the well known sites. The apartment is spotlessly clean and combines comfort and practicality. Kay made us feel very welcome and the fresh flowers and welcome pack of goodies were much appreciated. We were offered (and accepted) a daily email update about What's On in Orkney which was invaluable and meant we were able to attend an excellent lecture on Sea Eagles which we otherwise wouldn't have known about. It also included details on when the big cruise liners were in so we could avoid the towns on those days. Thoroughly enjoyed visiting The Tomb of the Eagles; Skara Brae, The Ring of Brodgar and the Stones of Stenness; The Broch of Gurness and The Sands of Evie were a particular favourite; Yesnaby; Cuween chambered cairn; Maes Howe (if you want to visit the interior make sure you book beforehand as they get booked up quickly) and of course Kirkwall and Stromness. The museums in these two towns were very interesting. The bird life was amazing (wish I knew more) and we saw seals at Stenness. The fossil museum is good for wet days and the cinema in Kirkwall has a different film most evenings. The only downside was that we were prepared for it to be cold and windy...and it was. With plenty of layers on however this really didn't matter. Nine days wasn't enough!
Thank you so much for your kind words and tips on holidaying in Orkney.

"Excellent base for exploring Orkney"
The apartment is one of three, adapted from a house in Dounby, which is a small village in central Orkney mainland. We found it an excellent location - rural and quiet, yet a very short walk from shops and restaurants, whilst only 20 minutes from all the main centres, e.g. Kirkwall, Stromness. From here we easily accessed the whole of the island and its charms - there is much to explore, both history and contemporary. The local people are remarkably friendly and welcoming, none more so than Kay, the owner of the property, who ensued we had everything we needed for comfort. The apartment has extras that we normally expect to pay for, such as wi-fi, laundry facilities, included in the cost. It is warm and cosy. The beds (one double, one twin) comfortable and all the rooms spacious and well-equipped. It was quite newly decorated when we stayed. We had a very good stay and would recommend this property, the village, and Orkney.
So glad you found the location ideal for exploring Orkney and that you enjoyed Kringla. Many thanks.

"Lovely apartment, great location"
Kringla 3 is a lovely apartment, well furnished and equipped and good value. We stayed as a group with 2 couples and there was plenty of room for us all. The apartments are well situated in Dounby, very close to a co-op and the attractions on the west side of the Island
I appreciate you taking the time to write a reveiw. Thank you.

Each time we come to Orkney we stay a bit longer- this time for 4 weeks, difficult for self- catering accommodation. Luckily Tripadvisor suggested Krinla and it hasn't disappointed. I'm a little wary about all 5 star reviews and usually find a tiny downside; this time I can't! The appartment is like a new furnished flat and the location convenient for touring Orkney. The Co-op, post office and butcher are above average and 1 minute away. Finally I can't avoid Kay's blushes to say she and Dave work tirelessly to make sure all runs smoothly.
There is so much to see and do in Orkney I think 4 weeks is a great idea! So many of our guests say that they wish they had stayed longer. Well done!

"The perfect base to explore The Orkney Islands"
Kringla, which had been recently completed in July 2012, represented a wonderful base for our family to explore the wonders of the Orkney Mainland and a few of the islands. The accommodation was clean and comfortable with all the conveniences we needed for our stay. The property is within very short walking distance of a village shop and a pub/hotel. Walks from the house into the surrounding countryside are filled with wonderful sights. The folk of Dounby are friendly and welcoming. Wider afield, Mainland is endowed with many attractions. These span human history; from the Neolithic to World War 2. There is never a dull moment in Orkney. Go to Orkney; go to Dounby; stay at Kringla. You'll have a wonderful holiday!
