The Brittany / Finistere region
Douarnenez is a haven for sailors and fishermen and enjoys a mild climate. This area of Brittany is known as Cornouaille, whose capital is Quimper, a bustling thriving town. The coastline can be quite dramatic,La Torche being the rendevous for surfers whereas Cap Sizun provides a wild and magnificent setting for rare birds.
Pointe de Raz is a rocky promontary at the tip of Cornouille, now heavily protected as part of France's national heritage. From Douarnenez you are perfectly positioned to visit the lovely coastal towns of Benodet, and Pont L'abbe, as well as exploring the inland city of Quimper and charming villages such as Locronan only a few minutes drive away. Brittany has strong identity in terms of culture, peoples ' landscape and history. It has dramatic coast, white surf beaches and sheltered white sandy beaches. There is sparse heathland and dense forest, medieval ports and abundant seafood. It is the ideal place for a family holiday.
Douarnenez / Kerlaz area
The house overlooks the Bay of Douarnenez, Plage de Trezmalaouen a 3 km stretch of sand , being a 8 minute walk away. This is a popular beach for beginner surfers, before attempting the big waves at La Torche or Bai des Trepasse 30 minutes away ! The house is privateand peaceful situated at the end of a lane so there is no through traffic, yet the town of Douarnenez is only 4km away. Douarnenez can be divided into 3 parts- the Old Port , the main town and Port Rhu , where there is a maritime Museum.
This is a popular area for sailing and Douarnenez has a strong history of fishing, being particularly famous for sardines ! Across the river is Treboul, once part of Douarnenez, where there are sandy beaches , a Spa , Thalassothermie, daily fish markets and twice weekly markets brimming with local produce- vegetables and fruit, seafood, oysters and the wonderful spider crabs ! At Treboul there are tennis courts and an indoor court close to the pretty beach Les Sables Blancs. Treboul has a sailing club and scuba diving school , and various cafes and restaurants bordering the marina. There is an abundance of good restaurants both in the town and in the neighbouring small towns and villages. The well known 'petit cite de characteur' , Locronan is a short drive away, its cobbled streets lined with prettty shops and restaurants.
Twenty minutes drive will take you to the capital of Finistere, Quimper, a pretty large town with a busy daily market and many interesting shops and restaurants as well as old churches and characterful streets. This area has a huge amount to offer for day trips- Pointe de Raz with its dramatic coastline, Benodet, famous for its marina and sailing, Pont L'abbe and much more. The area is quite unspoilt with a marked lack of large hotels and commercial buildings and here one can really experience true Breton life .
