Description: This is quite simply one of the most famous districts in Venice. Its unique main square, the Piazza San Marco, is one of the most photographed areas in the city and the sheer scale is a reminder of the grand era of the Venetian Republic, particularly in the Mediterranean; where it boasted a strategic position and very busy trade.
It is also home to numerous luxury hotels, restaurants and shops, and is the site of both the Palazzo Ducale and the famous bridge the Ponte dei Sospiri. This particular area of Venice has great historical significance and has been an important centre of politics and justice for many years.
Numerous palaces, the properties of the Patrician families of Ancient Rome, decorate the banks of the Grand Canal, and a host of important churches can also be found in this district.
The construction of the square began in the XI century. It was flooded on several occasions and its shape subsequently modified. The current square dates back to the last reform that was made in the year 1177. The cobblestones have been changed several times; the last being in 1890.
The gothic style Palazzo Ducale was the residence of the Dux during the Republic. It was built between the X and XI centuries but their various successors have made reforms and extensions to eventually create the building that stands today. It is currently used as a museum.
The Ponti dei Sospiri (the Bridge of Sighs) connects the Palazzo Ducale to the ancient prison that was used by the inquisition, I Piombi. The baroque style prison dates back to the XVII century and was named in reference to the prisoners who were brought here, and the site where they were to appreciate the sea and sky for the very last time.
Further places of interest in the area include: La Fenice theatre, the San Moisè church and the Palazzo Grassi that has recently been converted into an exhibition palace.
