About this location
The Caithness and Sutherland region
The highlands of Scotland where the town of Dornoch is based offer peaceful surroundings with great road networks, public transport, superb scenery and friendly helpful people who welcome visitors. The area has no big towns or cities, the nearest being Inverness which is 45 minutes away. The coastal towns of Wick and Thurso are around an hour away. Orkney can be reached by passenger or car ferry from Scrabster or John O Groats again around an hours drive north of our caravan.
The town of Dornoch has a small population. The town centre features craft shops, grocery shops, antique shops, cafes and several good restaurants and bars where you can enjoy some local whiskies and meet the locals . There are fish and chip shops, chinese and indian takeaways in town. Bookshops, butchers and a bank are also available. On Saturday nights in the Summer time, the local pipe band also play in the village square. the cathedral in Dornoch is also worth a look. The pop singer Madona had her son christened there in 2001 before she married the film director Guy Ritchie at nearby Skeibo Castle (not open to the public). You can also tour the west coast of Sutherlandshire from Dornoch by going across country at the Mound, 6 miles north of the site, which will lead you to Lairg from where you can branch north east or northwards to explore. A car is really the best way to see this remarkable part of the world. Further north in the Flow Country of Caithness, this has been compared with the last known wilderness in the world outside of Russia.
