The magnificent Dorset coastline, together with the outstanding natural beauty of the unspoilt countryside, makes this county a very special place to come and explore. There is plenty for everyone from couples to families.
Along the Jurassic Coast you will find many accessible places where fossil hunting is a popular pastime. Beach lovers have a wide choice of beaches to enjoy including the sandy expanses at Swanage and Weymouth.
Inland Dorset's landscape is delightfully varied. Towards Swanage and Studland in the east you will find flat heathland with an abundance of wildlife. The centre of Dorset is chalk downland, with extensive rivers and streams. To the west of Dorset beyond Dorchester the land is more hilly, with a rich landscape of woodland and small fields.
For walkers Dorset offers great variety through wonderful scenery, from short and middle distance strolls to long distance national trails. Around the village of Milborne St Andrew there are a number of footpaths including one which runs up the lane next to the house and leads into open countryside.
For those looking for a more relaxed break there is a wealth of delightful villages and historic buildings to browse and explore with many National Trust properties including Thomas Hardy's cottage near Dorchester and Brownsea Island in Poole harbour. For those looking for the seaside you will find many beaches and coves only a short drive away.
The Dorchester / Milborne St Andrew area
Dorchester is a bustling market town with over 400 shops and businesses (including a new major development started in 2011 which includes a new cinema and will soon have a range of shops and restaurants) to satisfy everyone's interest. As well as a great selection of high street regulars, Dorchester has its own speciality shops that attract people from all over the south west. There is an extensive weekly market on Wednesdays where you can buy local produce as well as browse the wide variety of stalls.
There is a choice of museums including the award winning County Museum with information about Thomas Hardy, the Jurassic Coast, the county's history and much more.
Other attractions in the area of interest to families and those with specialist knowledge, too numerous to list them all here, include the Bovington Tank Museum, Monkey World, Abbotsbury Swannery, Durlston Country Park and the Swanage steam railway.
