The Zagreb Region

Croatian Zagorje is a historical geographical area in Croatia north of the capital city Zagreb (half hour drive) and Nature park Medvednica. Taking into account the more cultural factors, such as speech and other effects, capital city of Zagreb could even be classified as a capital of Croatian Zagorje.

Capital cities in Croatian Zagorje are Varazdin and Krapina. Krapina is also Kajkavian Culture Center.

Zagorje is also known for his regional Kajkavian dialect. The city of Krapina is also world famous for his Neanderthal findings – Husnjakovo hill. Krapina Neanderthal Museum spreads on over 1200 m3 and is one of the most modern museums in Central Europe www.mkn.mhz.hr.

Varazdin is famous for its concerts of classical music – Baroque Evenings www.vbv.hr and his costume street event – Špancirfest www.spancirfest.com. In the area of ??Zagorje there is more than 50 castles and fortresses. Particularly attractive are the castles of the Baroque period. Even then that was the landscape of the nobility and it was attractive for holidays and leisure, and that's why there are so many castles in such a small space.

Zagorje is rich for thermal springs with medicinal waters and therefore has a long tradition of spa (even the Romans bathed here). As an example Varaždinske spa, Tuheljske spa, Stubica spa…

Donja Stubica

It's hard to choose one season in which the beauty of Croatian Zagorje the most prominent.

Idyllic green area that is interwoven with rivers and streams in the forests and vineyards are just breathtaking and offers in every season so much desired peace and quiet.

In spring and summer you can hike, ride a bike, swim in the spa and visit castles and museums. Since the ski area Medvednica (Sljeme) is located only 15 minutes from the house, it is possible to ski in winter associated with bathing in the hot spa! In winter, the snow-covered landscape with its vineyards and wine routes are particularly romantic.

There are a lots of concerts and events that are related to culture and history of the region, for example, historical games and peasant uprising (an uprising against the higher nobility, Matija Gubec, 1573.).

We must not forget the gastronomy! Regional local traditional specialties and wines are famous and we have to recommend it to you!

Visit to a traditional restaurant “cottages” and related wine tasting and enjoying the authentic traditional dishes is an experience for itself.
