Home description
With it's original stone walls, wooden beams and galley bedroom, Dragonfly cottage takes you away to another era. Sit on your private terrace and listen to the birdsong from the adjacent RSPB reserve and enjoy the wildlife the country garden attracts. The grounds are set in approximately an acre with private woodland walks down to the river and rocks below.
The cottage is set in a tranquil wooded environment in a small hamlet situated between Bontddu and Dolgellau on the picturesque, south-facing side of the Mawddach Estuary. Views of Cadir Idris and surrounding mountains can be seen from the cottage grounds. The local market town of Dolgellau is 2 miles and the harbour town of Barmouth is 7 miles with magnificent sandy beaches.

The North Wales / Snowdonia / Gwynedd region
Southern Snowdonia is the best kept secret in Wales, where the mountains meet the sea, but not overrun by tourists. Cadir Idris is the 3rd highest peak in Wales with the summit offering breathtaking views of the sea and seemingly endless surrounding mountain ranges. Miles of deserted, sandy beaches still exist where you can walk for hours and see just a few others, usually with a friendly nod and a wave.
The picturesque and bustling harbour town of Barmouth and market town of Dolgellau offer civilisation if any is needed! Both have cafes, music, seafood restaurants, galleries and antiques.
And don't forget to give Mum a night off from cooking - treat her to a gourmet meal at the Mawddach Restaurant (advance booking recommended) or simply walk across the estuary via the toll bridge (60p/car, 20p/pedestrian) to the George III pub. And keep those toes tapping as The Last Inn in Barmouth has live music every Tues evening.
Nearby Harlech Castle is a World Heritage site and sits high on a cliff top completely dominating the small town.
Dolgellau / Bontddu area
There are many other hidden gems within a few miles of the cottage. For the active types, the River of Gold walk starts at the source of the River Mawddach following the estuary all the way to the sea in Barmouth. The Coed y Brenin mountain biking centre offers some of the best trails in Europe and the National Whitewater Centre is just an hour away at Tryweryn near Bala. Or take a seakyaking tour on the Mawddach estuary with Up 4 Adventures outdoor adventures providers in Dolgellau.
For intellectual stimulation there's The Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth offering solutions to some of the most serious challenges facing our planet and the human race, such as climate change, pollution and the waste of precious resources. A stop at the Corris Craft Centre along the way is not to be missed with ten individual workshops from unique Celtic and contemporary jewellery to ceramics and rustic furniture.
