The North Wales region

Southern Snowdonia is the best kept secret in Wales, where the mountains meet the sea, but not overrun by tourists. Cadair Idris is the 3rd highest peak in Wales with the summit offering breathtaking views of the sea and seemingly endless surrounding mountain ranges. Miles of deserted, sandy beaches still exist where you can walk for hours and see just a few others, usually with a friendly nod and a wave.

The picturesque and bustling harbour town of Barmouth and market town of Dolgellau offer civilisation if any is needed! Both have cafes, music, seafood restaurants, galleries and antiques.

Nearby Harlech Castle is a World Heritage site and sits high on a cliff top completely dominating the small town.

For intellectual stimulation there's The Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth offering solutions to some of the most serious challenges facing our planet and the human race, such as climate change, pollution and the waste of precious resources. A stop at the Corris Craft Centre along the way is not to be missed with ten individual workshops from unique Celtic and contemporary jewellery to ceramics and rustic furniture.

Dolgellau

There are many other hidden gems within a few miles of the cottage. For the active types, the River of Gold walk starts at the source of the River Mawddach following the estuary all the way to the sea in Barmouth. The Coed y Brenin mountain biking centre offers some of the best trails in Europe and the National Whitewater Centre is just an hour away at Tryweryn near Bala. Or take a seakyaking tour on the Mawddach estuary with Up 4 Adventures outdoor adventures providers in Dolgellau.

Treat yourselves to a gourmet meal at the Bwyty Mawddach Restaurant (advance booking recommended) or simply take a quiet walk across the Mawddach estuary to the George III pub and enjoy a drink one of their fantastic carverys. If you are still feeling energetic continue walking (or cycle) along the breath taking Mawddach Trail. This path follows the old disused railway line along the edge of the estuary between Dolgellau and Barmouth. And if you want to keep those toes tapping, The Last Inn in Barmouth has live music every Tues evening.
