The North Wales region

Southern Snowdonia is the best kept secret in Wales, where the mountains meet the sea, but not overrun by tourists. Cadir Idris is the 3rd highest peak in Wales with the summit offering breathtaking views of the sea and seemingly endless surrounding mountain ranges. The haunting Mawddach Estuary and miles of deserted, sandy beaches still exist where you can walk for hours and see just a few others, usually with a friendly nod and a wave.

World Heritage site, Harlech Castle, and the famous village of Portmeirion, set of the TV series, The Prisoner, and are both within a short drive of the cottage. The Centre of Alternative Technology near Machynlleth, offers solutions to some of the most serious challenges facing our planet and the human race, such as climate change, pollution and the waste of precious resources. A stop at the Corris Craft Centre along the way is not to be missed with ten individual workshops from unique Celtic and contemporary jewellery to ceramics and rustic furniture.

For a bit of adventure, the Coed y Brenin mountain biking centre offers some of the best trails in Europe and hosts a Go Ape rope and tree-top adventure. Water activities abound with the National Whitewater Centre just an hour away at Tryweryn near Bala, seakyaking on the Mawddach Estuary with Up 4 Adventures in Dolgellau, and various chartered fishing and sea tours running from Barmouth pier.

Dolgellau

The picturesque market towns of Dolgellau and Machynlleth, along with the bustling harbour town of Barmouth, offer plenty of civilisation - if any is needed! All have cafes, music, seafood restaurants, galleries and antiques. And you can always enjoy a night of special music at Ty Siamas in Dolgellau, the National Centre for Welsh Folk Music.

There are many fantastic walks within a few miles of the cottage. The Torrent Walk path runs right from the cottage grounds through a beautiful wooded gorge along the spectacular fall of the Clywedog River. The Creganon Lakes up in the foothills of Cadir Idris have views of the sea and Barmouth, while the famous Precipice and New Precipice Walks are both cliff-top walks with unrivaled views of Cadir Idris and the Mawddach Estuary.

Don't forget to give Mum a night off from cooking - treat her to a gourmet meal at the Mawddach Restaurant (advance booking recommended) or the newly renovated Cross Foxes pub. Or if you fancy a bit of old world charm, historic Penmaenuchaf and Dolserau Halls both offer a cafe and dinner service to non-residents. The George III pub in Penmaenpool is an historical railway station along the Mawddach Trail, a former railway line that runs all the way to Barmouth.

"A nice place to spend a week relaxing and as a base for exploring the area"

We enjoyed staying in Garden Cottage for a week in July. Good location with lovely views across to Cadair Idris, and nice to be able to wander in the estate grounds as well as down to the Torrent Wal… More
