The North Wales region
The cottage is located in an area of mixed woodland and farm land. The estuary is in front of the cottage with the Rhinog mountains and the Snowdonia National Park in the background. The whole area offers unrivalled scenery and walking which is only limited by your imagination.
The foothills of Cader Idris, the second biggest mountain in Wales, are behind the cottage. The cottage is a great base for bird watchers as in addition to the estuary, there are a number of RSPB reserves in the close vacinity.
Penmaenpool is a small hamlet on the Mawdacch estuary, two miles outside the market town of Dolgellau. Dolgellau has a livestock market every Friday and over 200 listed buildings, which is the highest concentration in Wales, it has plenty of charm with shops lining the narrow streets which link the various town squares.
The resorts of Barmouth and Fairbourne, with their blue flag beaches are with easy reach by bike, on foot or in the car. There is a wide range of outdoor activities within the immediate area, ranging from pony trecking to white water rafting.
A 30 minutes drive takes you to Bala town which is a great place for water sports, the area has won world-wide acclaim as a centre for water sports, especially sailing, canoeing and rafting. Visitors like to challenge the white water on the river Tryweryn or enjoy sailing or windsurfing on the lake. Bala also has a range of interesting shops, inns, restaurants and a historical Town Walk.
The Italian style village of Portmerion, Harlech Castle, the Centre of Alternative Technology and Coed y Brenin Mountain Bike centre all make a first class day out.
There are some very good restaurants that have recently opened in the area, the Cross Foxes bar and grill room was opened in Nov 2010 and is only a 3 mile drive, Bwyty Mawddach (3 miles), Minffordd Hotel (4 miles). and Tynycornel Hotel (4 miles). There is a good selection of pubs and restaurants and takeaways in Dolgellau and of course the renowned George 111 Hotel is walking distance from the cottage.

"Great value cottage in beautiful location, recommended"
Our family had a wonderful holiday staying here - the cottage had everything we needed; traditional, cozy, clean and functional, everything we hoped it would be. Superb location and a wonderful base for exploring everything Wales has to offer - beaches, castles, mountains, beautiful villages, fine walks, cycling, steam trains... Good stock of books, puzzles and DVDs to keep the kids and adults happy on a rainy day. Kitchen facilities fine, and plenty of good places to eat out nearby (and a few good takeaways in Dolgellau too!). Very friendly owner and easy to book; we'd happily go back.

"awfully smelling carpet in kitchen and living room"
In this cottage a very old carpet with stains on it is covering the floor in the living room and in the kitchen. Both rooms are on the ground floor. This carpet smelled very awful - a mixture of dampn… More
Please don't judge our cottage, based on this review.
My cleaner made four visits before the guest honoured an appointment to investigate the 'smell'.
When access was granted my cleaner and her partner were unable to trace any smell and their offer of air fresheners and 'shake and vac' were all turned down. In the end the guest became intimidating and even said she knew where the cleaner lived! In view of what happened, I declined any refund. We have had some lovely feedback from the 6 happy families who have stopped at the cottage since this issue.

"Characterful, cosy cottage in a superb location"
Stayed with friends and family. Very helpful and considerate owners who keep the property to an excellent standard. Easy parking and great location for Beach, Hill Walking, Mountain Biking, Fishing, Historic sites etc. Only 2 minute walk to a great Pub and restaurant with fantastic views over the Mawddach Estuary. Dolgellau town is only a 2 mile drive with lots of facilities, Supermarkets etc open till late.
Overall a great base for exploring a beautiful part of the world and great to come back to a roaring log fire in the evening.

"A lovely cottage with stunning views"
The cottage was warm and cosey for a holiday in October. There was plenty of room for 2 adults and 2 children with a TV, games and books, giving us plenty to do in the evenings. Having an open fire was also a bonus. Just a few minutes walk away and you are on the Mawddach Trail and also George III hotel that do amazing meals. We would cycle to Dolgellau taking the trail. The route is totally stunning and safe for all ages to cycle.
The owner was really friendly and has made the cottage very homely.
I have already recommended it to my friends

"Cosy cottage near Penmaenpool toll bridge"
A cosy well equipped cottage with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. There is a nice private garden to the rear with patio table and chairs. The lounge is very comfortable and there is a very good selection of books and games available which our grandchildren
enjoyed reading and playing with. Car parking is in a layby across a busy road so care is needed when staying with small children .

Cottage comfortable and relaxing with a lovely location and views. The only thing off putting was when opening the front their was the table and chairs with an univiting plastic table cloth. The George Hotel was excellent but do not go on a Thursday night as this is the local Rotary Club night and it is really busy and you have to wat for a table.
