The South East England / Greater London region
London is one of the most exciting cities in Europe, with a wealth of history, great art, lots of wonderful parks, some of the best restaurants in the world and an exciting financial centre. As the great Samuel Johnson said "...when a man is tried of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford."
There is a river bus which travels along the Thames from Greenwich Pier (which is 2 Miles away) to the Tower of London and Westminster. 20 minutes from the centre of London via British Rail, 2 trains per hour. The pier is 2 minutes walk from the house.
Big Ben, House of Parliament. TheTower of London, Buckingham Palace. A visit to Madame Tussaude. A shopping trip to Oxford street and Harrods of Knightbridge in the West End of London and the night life of London.whether it is business or leisure.
Other London attractions such as the Tate Modern, St. Paul’s, Shakespeare’s Globe, Millennium Bridge, HMS Belfast, Tower Bridge and the Tower of London are all close by including:
The Royal Greenwich Observatory is located in Greenwich and the Prime Meridian passes through the building. Greenwich Mean Time was at one time based on the time observations made at the Royal Greenwich Observatory, before being superseded by Coordinated Universal Time. While Greenwich no longer hosts a working astronomical observatory, a ball still drops daily to mark the exact moment of 1 pm (13:00), and there is a museum of astronomical and navigational tools, particularly John Harrison's marine chronometers.
The observatory is situated in Greenwich Park, which used to be the grounds of the Royal Palace of Placentia. At the bottom of the park is the National Maritime Museum which also includes the Queen's House, designed by Inigo Jones.
The 24-hour clock at GreenwichThe Old Royal Naval College is Sir Christopher Wren's domed masterpiece at the centre of the heritage site. The site is administered by the Greenwich Foundation who open it daily, free of charge, to visitors. Several of the buildings are let to The University of Greenwich and one, the King Charles block, to Trinity College of Music. The Painted Hall, was painted by James Thornhill, and the Chapel of St Peter & St Paul- St Paul's Chapel interior designed by James Athenian Stuart, both buildings are open to the public as is the Visitor Centre from which guided tours run daily 7 days a week.
Greenwich also features the world's only museum dedicated to fans, the Fan Museum, in a Georgian townhouse at 10–12 Croom's Hill (fee payable). Also on Croom's Hill, on the corner of the junction with Nevada Street is Greenwich Theatre, formerly Crowder's Music Hall - one of two Greenwich theatres, the other being Greenwich Playhouse.
The Cutty Sark (a clipper ship) has been preserved in a dry dock by the river. A major fire in May 2007 destroyed a part of the ship, although much had already been removed for restoration. Its future has yet to be decided. Nearby for many years was also displayed Gipsy Moth IV, the 54ft yacht sailed by Sir Francis Chichester in his single-handed, 226-day circumnavigation of the globe during 1966–67. In 2004, Gypsy Moth IV was removed from Greenwich, and after restoration work completed a second circumnavigation in May 2007. On the riverside in front of the north-west corner of the Hospital is an obelisk erected in memory of Arctic explorer Joseph René Bellot.
Near the remains of the Cutty Sark, a circular building contains the entrance to the Greenwich foot tunnel. This connects Greenwich to the Isle of Dogs on the northern side of the River Thames. The north exit of the tunnel is at Island Gardens, from where the famous view of Greenwich Hospital painted by Canaletto can be seen.
Royal Observatory, Greenwich. Notice the time ball atop the Octagon Room. The O2(formerly the Millennium Dome) was built on a disused British Gas site on the Greenwich Peninsula[7]. It is next to North Greenwich tube station, about three miles east from the Greenwich town centre, northwest of Charlton. The Greenwich Millennium Village is a new urban regeneration development to the south of the Dome.
East Greenwich has a small park, East Greenwich Pleasaunce, which was formerly the burial ground of Greenwich Hospital.
The town centre features Greenwich Market, a covered market popular with tourists at the weekends. The owners, Greenwich Hospital are undertaking public consultation to consider ideas to regenerate the site whilst retaining the Market.
In 1997, maritime Greenwich was added to the list of World Heritage Sites. In recognition of the suburb's astronomical links, Asteroid 2830 has been named 'Greenwich'.
Canary Wharf is planned on a grand scale, yet with meticulous attention to detail. The estate extends to over 97 acres and is so called because when in use as a dock, many of the imports were from the Canary Islands.
Approximately 14.1 million square feet of office and retail space has been constructed to date.
The first tenants moved into Canary Wharf in August 1991. Now over 90,000 people work here.
Currently the development comprises over 30 completed buildings and over 200 shops, bars and restaurants within four retail malls. It also has a conference and banqueting centre, two Dockland Light Railway stations, a Jubilee Line station, car parks and approximately 20 acres of landscaped open spaces.
Central London/Zone 2 / Isle of Dogs area
Located in the most historical part of Central London,Canary Wharf is a thriving space and vibrant business district with a wide range of shops, restaurants, pubs and wine bars, as well as healthcare and leisure facilities and an extensive arts and events programme.
The Isle of Dogs has provided stunning locations for some of the biggest blockbusters like the action-packed opening scenes of James Bond movie The World is Not Enough and other blockbusters like Batman Begins, The Constant Gardener, Love Actually and more recently 28 Weeks Later; the sequel to 28 Days Later.
The vision of Canary Wharf is now a reality. Leading international companies enjoy the highest quality buildings, facilities and infrastructure within London's newest business district.
Dramatic changes are happening all around Canary Wharf. As the working and residential population increases, the area surrounding the Estate continues to grow into thriving living and working environment.
In design terms, Canary Wharf is one of the most highly specified urban areas in the world. For attention to details both on buildings and in the streetscape, it is virtually impossible to find a contemporary comparison.
Nearby there's Limehouse Basin full of yachts and cruisers and across the street is the river Thames and two very famous 17th Century pubs. “The Grapes” and “Booties” are well documented and renowned locally for their suppers and traditionally brewed ale.
The river bus travels from Canary Wharf to Westminster Pier or down river to Greenwich or to the futuristic Thames Barrier. Canary Wharf is nearby reached via the Thames Riverside walkway. This is the heartland of London Financial City with one of the best shopping malls London has to offer. There are some 70 exclusive shops and as many restaurants.
There are weekly events most of which are free. Canary Wharf has parks and fountains, fine waterside pubs and eateries.
