The Den
About the home
The Den has a spacious feel and is ideal for a family, or two couples holidaying together, yet is cosy for just two people. It is very well equipped and is like a 'home-from-home'. It is maintained to a very high standard of cleanliness and to ensure this we never have a changeover of visitors on a single day. We are quite flexible about lengths and dates of a stay.
Palgrave is a small Suffolk village with a number of interesting old houses, an ancient church and a well-treed green with a duckpond. There are footpaths all around & a large heathland 'The Ling' nearby.
A few minutes' drive brings you into Diss, a fascinating old town built around the Mere, a six-acre lake, with medieval houses & cobbled yards and a Friday market; there are three supermarkets at the edge of the town & numerous places to eat.
Holidays at The Den provide the opportunity to visit the 'sights' of Norfolk & Suffolk: for children the local zoo, the steam museum, 'Go Ape' adventure course at Thetford Forest and Pleasurewood Hills at Lowestoft are some of the more popular. Adults may enjoy bird-watching, visiting museums - especially of aviation -, castles & churches, the coastal areasof Norfolk & Suffolk and the many characterful small market towns with interesting shops, boutiques, pubs & restaurants.

The East Anglia / Norfolk region

Norfolk and Suffolk are largely rural areas, many parts of which appear almost unchanged since medieval times. Being right on the Norfolk Suffolk border, The Den offers easy access to both counties.
Suffolk Heritage Coast stetches from Lowestoft southwards for 40 miles and includes Southwold with it's sandy beaches, Aldeburgh with its Festival in June, Dunwich, a once thriving city mostly lost to the sea in the 14th century, and Snape with its famous concert hall at The Maltings.
Norfolk is described as the 'birdwatching capital of the UK', while Suffolk has an important nature reserve at Minsmere. In addition there is much to do and see, with many sites of historical interest, a superb coastline, the Broads for boating, a cathedral city and many ancient market towns.
There are a number of aviation museums in the vicinity, reflecting the large number of USAAF bases in the region in WW2; at Duxford is Europe's premier aviation museum, the Imperial War Museum.
East Anglia is one of the driest regions of the UK, generally having warm summers and low rainfall.
The Diss / Palgrave area
The old market town of Diss has a wide selection of shops, from supermarkets to family butchers, bookshops & boutiques and even a small department store; there is an excellent tourist office in Mere Street.
Every Friday there are antique and other Sales at Diss Auction Rooms (www.twgaze.com) and a market in the town centre. Here you'll find a bit of 'old England' and hear broad country accents as people arriving on buses from the outlying villages meet together.
There's a park with a children's play area, a public swimming pool and a golf course. The mainline railway station at Diss offers a fast service to London.
Close by at Bressingham is Blooms' Nursery and Steam Museum, and also nearby is Banham Zoo with over 1000 animals in 35 acres.

We love staying at The Den as it really is like home from home. Margaret and Terry Howard have made the home so comfortable and it is always so clean and welcoming. On arrival there was a tray ready for tea and biscuits and cakes which was much appreciated and unexpected. As we take our little dog with us, Margaret had left a fresh bowl of water for him and some bonios, Margaret is a very kind and thoughful person and it shows in many different ways. We would thoroughly recommend staying at The Den to everyone, and we look forward to our next visit there. |

The Den is very clean and comfortable and has everything you could possibly need. We had five people and all had plenty of room. The Howards are helpful and go beyond what is expected. The area is lovely with so much to do we couldn't possibly do all we wanted to. I would highly recommend The Den. |
