The apartment is situated in a hotel complex at the eastern end of the valley and the west facing balcony overlooks the village and surrounding mountains, where you can relax in the afternoon sun and take in the stunning views. Summer times means the opportunity to take a cable car and enjoy one of the many mountain walks especially at the top of the Oberalp pass where you can walk to the head of the Rhine. You can explore the area by car or mountain railway which links to many resorts such as Zermatt and St. Moritz. By car you can cross a high mountain pass into the southern most canton of Switzerland which borders the Italian Lakes of Lugano, Como and Maggiori, all can be reached in under two hours. Winter and the arrive of snow at Christmas gives you the choice of skiing in Disentis (ski bus first pick up is at the apartment) or going to the next village by car or train for lifts that go up to 2500m.

The Swiss Alps / Graubunden/Alps region
Graubunden contains some of the oldest and most well known ski resorts of Klosters, Davos and St. Moritz, along with the extensive ski arena of Flims/Laax. Laax is about 30 minutes drive from the apartment in Disebtis and provides some of the best skiing in the region, with a wide variety of runs. This is a German speaking region bordering Austria, Italy and Lichtenstein and the economy is based around the tourist trade both in Winter and Summer.
Disentis area
Disentis is at the end of a long valley with the regional centre of Chur at the eastern end. As you travel along the Surselva valley you pass a number of ski resorts such as Flims (40mins), Briggels and Obersaxen(30mins). The countryside is rural with a few small villages and many small farms. Disentis is one of the larger villages with a large monastery that can be seen for many miles and contains many interesting baroque features. The houses of the village are typical for this area in the traditional timber chalet style and surrounding the village are many smaller hamlets centred around a white church. In the summer visitors make use of the ski lifts to acess many of the walking routes in the surrounding hills, or take the funicular railway to the neighbouring village of Sedrun or over the high pass to Andermatt. This is the Oberalp pass which takes you over towards central Switzerland and Zermatt, it is also here that you can walk to the head of the Rhine which starts here on its journey to the North Sea. The railway links you to many other destinations and one a day the world famous Glacier express stops in Disentis to change its engine for the climb over the pass. A drive south through the stunning Lukmanier pass takes you to the Italian Lakes about an hour and a half away. In Winter the village (1180m)has a gondola which takes you up to the middle station(1800m), further lifts take you higher to 2800m. The runs are a mix of red and blue with a black run down to the valley station and there are also possibilities for off piste skiing, with skier tracking facilities. Even more skiing is available in the neighbouring village of Sedrun which has lights reaching 3000m and links to the summit of the Oberalp Pass and the mountain railway.
