Home description

This cottage is a very special place. Set in a peaceful and tranquil place it is almost three hundred years old and has been recently renovated so that it is bright and spacious with large comfortable open living areas while still retaining its original traditional charm. There is a large well maintained private garden and a small stream which runs along the rear perimeter so the gentle sound of running water permeates throughout.

It is situated 8 kilometres west of Dingle town in the Irish speaking (Gaelteacht) area; a few minutes drive from a choice of superb beaches.
There are lots of interesting activities available within a short distance such as Dolphin watching, island trips, golf links, horse riding, 'play at height' indoor climbing walls and of course some very spectacular landscapes to explore. The Dingle area has been described by National Geographic magazine as the "most beautiful place on Earth"!! You will have to decide for yourself..

The cottage is in the town land of Bhaile Boithin between the villages of Ventry and Ballyferriter(Baillewiheen), facing onto Ireland's second highest mountain, Mount Brandon, across Smerwick harbour on the north side of the peninsula,

There are numerous Neolithic, early Christian sites and ancient holy wells around the area, some only a stones throw away. Some of these locations are well known and appear on the tourist trails others are hidden and rarely found. When you go searching it does not take long to appreciate why those ancient holy men and women chose this place.

The County Kerry region

The Dingle peninsula is the furthest westerly point in Ireland and Europe. It is a place of breathtaking rugged mountains and sweeping valleys. It has been called the "most beautiful place on Earth" by National Geographic.

Historically the area has been remote and inaccessible and it is only in relatively recent times that the penninsula has been opened up, as it were.

Because of its inaccessible terrain the native tongue of the Gaelic people has survived here and you may if you are lucky hear Europes oldest language spoken here and there about the place.

Dingle area

I am not alone in extolling the charms of Dingle quite recently CNN chose Dingle a the best winter destination

(see their story on http://www.cnn.com/2008/TRAVEL/getaways/12/17/dingle.ireland/).

Why CNN would choose Dingle is easy to understand. The winter climate is moderate thanks to the warm gulf stream that runs along the coast. There is much to explore here. From the long empty beaches to the impressive mountains to the rich archeological heritage and mythology of the place. There are unspoken mysteries about the palce, but you will rarely get satisfaction much less a straight answer asking a local. It is as if they have become immune to over the centuries.

The mountains and glens are richly endowed with the monuments and remains of the past. Near the cottage there are ancient monasteries neolitic graves and standing stones. Indulge yourself and visit forelorn mountain lakes where legend tell us ancient heros batteling demons or just park and watch the sun set in the Atlantic ocean behind the Blasket islands. The stark beauty of the place is sometimes awesome and can often catch you unaware, watch out.

Further details indoors:
The cottage has been extensively renovated and we are very pleased with the final result which retains the best features of the traditional structure and merges it with a bright open modern style. It has four bedrooms, two doubles with en suite bathrooms and two singles (each with twin single beds).

The interior of the house is full of pleasant surprises, old features retained and new features added. It is an exceptionally spacious and comfortable space that fills one with a pleasant sense of wellbeing.

In the evening time choose a book from the house collection and sit by the open fire or maybe watch sat tv/dvd while someone else gets to grip tonights culinary masterpiece in the superb kitchen space.

Further details outdoors:
The cottage is exceptionally private with a large private garden at the rear and a path down to the stream. There is generous parking for four or more cars a large well maintained garden with patio, barbecue. A bubbeling stream flows along the back of the property so the relaxing sound of running water permeates throughout.

Further details

You are in the heart of the 'Gaelteacht' here, ( that is the Gaelic/Irish language speaking area of Ireland) all the locals you will meet will speak English. Nevertheless a word or two of Irish as a gesture of cultural respect would never be a bad thing. (See the literature I leave about the house!). This is a great place for kids, there is plenty of exploring to be done, but please be careful of toddlers near the stream.
