The Brittany region

The Côtes-d'Armor, meaning 'land of the sea', certainly lives up to its name. It comprises the majority of Brittany's highly attractive Northern coastline, including a number of islands. Among the rocky cliffs that look out towards England are some great beaches.

The department boasts 15,000 acres of Forest, while the land nearer the coast is used mainly for the farming of vegetables.

Côtes-d'Armor lies on the Northern coast of Brittany, it has a a beautiful rugged coastline with steep cliffs and is dotted with quaint, medieval towns.

Dinan which sits on the river Rance is well worth a visit if you like ancient castles. Breton music is often to be heard at local festivals.

St Malo, the Corsair town, inside ramparts and bordering the sea, is worth a visit. Enjoy street cafes and walking the ramparts.

Dinard has many bars and fine restaurants. The abundance of beaches coupled with a consistently sunny weather, however, attracts many visitors during the summer holidays. The attractions include a casino with a restaurant facing the sea and a hall which hosts many exhibitions. The nearby towns of Saint-Briac-sur-Mer and Saint-Lunaire also feature respectively a fairly large golf course and the beach of Longchamp, renowned as a "surfers' spot". Dinard holds, every year, a Festival of British Cinema in the first days of October.

The Côtes d’Armor is the largest European producer of scallops so it's well worth sampling the fresh shellfish.

The seaside resort of St. Cast with its seven beaches has been popular since the beginning of the 20th century. At the end of the main beach is a small hill which offers excellent views from the summit over the Emerald Coast and Cap Fréhel. Coastal walks along the jagged cliffs are particularly impressive, and a bit tiring.

Since Brittany is on the west coast of France, it has a warm temperate climate. It can get pretty hot in the summer months, up to about 30 degrees.

Dinan

St. Maden is about 15 minutes from Dinan.

The medieval town of Dinan overlooks the River Rance which has a fine Gothic bridge. There are many excellent preserved 13th /14th century half timbered buildings, and plenty of shops producing high quality merchandise, including craft shops for leather, silk, pottery, wood and glass. Most of the craft shops are in Rue du Jerzual, and there are also two galleries to visit: Galerie St. Sauveur, 12 Rue de l'Apport, and Galerie Phonographe at 2 Rue de l'Apport. The Old Town of Dinan has quaint cobbled streets, and a tourist train is available for those who prefer not to walk. You can take a walk along The Ramparts, and just outside is the Jardin Anglais, a terraced garden. From the Old Town, Rue de Petite Fort is a marvellously preserved medieval lane leading down to the river. Dinan Château is home to a small museum and there is a panoramic view of the town from the watchtower. The Tour de l'Horloge on Rue de l'Horloge has a clock dating back to 1498. The 15th century Maison de Gouverneur is also worth a visit. Just outside the town is the Rail Museum. Dinan has a weekly market on Thursdays. There are many restaurants from Creperies to haute cuisine.

On the route to Cap Fréhel is Matignon which has a colourful market on Wednesdays.

The Emerald Coast stretches east from Dinard and has many beautiful beaches and rocky coves.

For those who wish to have some shops/restaurants nearby; St. Jacut, Ploubalay, St. Briac, St Cast and Lancieux are all quite close.

More wild, and totally natural, Cap Fréhel has wonderful cliff walks and climbs down to the most amazing beaches. Plévenon is about 5 minutes from the coast and has restaurants etc. From Cap Fréhel itself, where there is an old lighthouse, and a restaurant, as one heads south, the cliffs give way to sand dunes. There is a restaurant/creperie to the left after the beaches.

Towards Sables d'Or les Pins the beaches are almost at road level. Sables d 'Or itself has a small casino and many restaurants. One car hire bikes and pedal power 'cars'. There are also boats, wind-driven beach carts etc.

There is an excellent tourist office in Dinan where you will be able to find more than enough to fill your holiday.

"It had it all..."

Location very rural France and very quiet, peaceful and picturesque but definitely needed a car.
No local services, but nearby villages/towns offered everything we needed.
The house had everything from corkscrew to garden umbrella to iron and dishwasher. Out buildings housed bikes and garden accessories, just a little hard to manage the doors. We made use of the push bikes, enough to suit 5 of us, but all needed minor adjustments to get them going.
