The Brittany region

Brittany is an area of outstanding natural beauty with a long attractive coastline and beautiful sandy beaches, dramatic headlands and peaceful coves. There is a string of seaside towns and villages, each with their own charms. Just south of the ferry port of St Malo is Dinan, one of Brittany's best preserved medieval towns with a wealth of timber framed merchant's houses and a network of cobbled streets.

Inland is equally attractive, with peaceful countryside where you can find traditional Breton villages, chapels and market towns.

The cottage is situated in the old part of the village of Lanvallay. The house is part of a cluster of traditional Breton granite cottages, a short walk from the village where you can find a good bakery, restaurants and a supermarket. You are also close to Dinan's picturesque port area, about a 10 to 15 minute walk or 3 minutes by car.

On the Port of Dinan, you can sit and watch the world go by from one of the riverside cafes and restaurants, take a boat trip to the old citadel port of St. Malo or hire a self drive boat and explore the delightful river Rance. You can also hire a bike here , and follow the towpath into the beautiful countryside. Ten minutes upstream is the picturesque village of Lehon with its own castle, twelfth century abbey and open air heated swimming pool complex.

From the port , you can walk up the Rue du Jerzual ( steep but worth the effort!) to the historic centre of Dinan, a beautiful, well preserved medieval town. Behind the ramparts the old centre is a network of cobbled streets, timber framed buildings housing shops, cafés and restaurants.

You can reach the beautiful sandy beaches of the North coast in about 35 minutes, here you can explore St Malo, Dinard and the other seaside villages which have such appeal. Mont St Michel is about 45 minutes away, and well worth a visit.

There is a good number of excellent golf courses a short drive away from the house, including Dinard (founded in 1887), St Malo, Pen Guen (St Cast) and Sables D'Or at Cap Frehel.

"Spacious and with the comforts of home"

We had a great time here, and there was lots of space with three floors (kitchen/dining downstairs, bedroom/bathroom on middle floor, living room on top floor). Internet was very good and there were … More

"Fantastic location,a real "France"experience,a must for anyone seeking an authentic French trip in beautiful surroundings"

What a superb holiday!!we hunted high and low for a gite to stay in,in the Dinan area and decided on here, and what a good choice!we had hoped for something in central Dinan but settled on Lanvallay, just a short and very pretty walk from Dinan and the port..In hindsight we were glad we picked here and not something central as it was so peaceful, sitting outside in the evening in the sun was a joy,all you could hear was the bells in the town. And despite the solitude we were only 10 mins walk from the town and the river and thoroughly enjoyed the walks recommended by the owner, the gite was perfect, well equipped and modern but with a real cottagey feel with lots of character,a great base to walk to Dinan and the excellent local supermarket and also to drive to mont st michel,Dinard,Rennes and the coast..we are most definitely going back and will not bother searching for another gite as this was ideal..happy to recommend whole heartedly!lovely thankyou a memorable stay..the only downer was the ferry strike which meant we had to drive to Calais to get home!!!

"Great house in an excellent location"

The house is in a lovely setting and within walking distance of Dinan if you have any difficulty walking it is not so good as there are a lot of hills. We stayed for a week and found it a great base to explore the local area and not too far from the coast either.
We found the house well equipped, the bed very comfortable and has a pretty private garden. We came with our teenage daughter, she stayed on the sofa bed on the top floor but it was not comfortable and it meant there was nowhere cosy to relax the evening as she was using the top floor! Therefore I would say the property is only really suitable for a couple.
There are some useful notes left by the owners which we used to find shortcuts and walks in the area. There is a good bakers within five minute walk and a supermarket.
Had a wonderful week and have already recommended it to family!
