The Turkish Aegean Coast region
The Aegean Coast region
The Aegean Coast is a truly beautiful part of Turkey and has something for everyone. Turkey's Aegean Coast is one of the country's most attractive holiday destinations, with towns such as Bodrum, Marmaris, Kusadasi and Altinkum sitting alongside a host of classical ruins and perfect beaches.
It will take you no more than 10 minutes by dolmus (local minibus) or via car to Altinkum resort centre with its Golden Sandy beaches and many bars and restaurants. Altinkum means Golden Sands in Turkish. With great sandy beaches and safe .shallow warm water ideal for small children. If you are not one for sitting on beach all day you can try many watersports at the beachfront.
There are 3 main beaches in Altinkum. Ist beach and 2nd Beach (sometimes called Tuntas Beach). Sunloungers and umbrellas can be rented from many of the restaurants and bars dotted along the waterfront. There is also 3rd beach which is close to the new marina. You will find a childrens carnival (fairground with rides) close to the Marina.
You can visit the new multi million pound marina ( D-Marin), this is one of the largest marinas in the whole of the Mediterranean region. You can admire the many luxury yachts moored here from around the world. Or you can easily spend a day relaxing at the Yacht Club.
Every Saturday is market day in Didim where you can haggle with the sellers on many items including household goods, fruit, vegetables and fake designer goods.
8 minutes drive in the opposite direction will take you to Didim Aqua Park a great family day out. This Aqua park is very close to Mavesehir famous for its stunning sunsets and many seafront restaurants. Mavesehir is famous for its daily market which opens very late (summer months) and is good for bargain hunting. Fruit, vegetables, designer fake clothing and many other things can be purchased here. It has many restaurants which offer great tasting food at reasonable cost.
Just 10 minutes walk from our apartments or 5 minutes by car is the famous Temple of Apollo (Didyma). This is one of Turkeys premier ancient tourist site. It should be on top of the things to do in in Altinkum (Didim). This is one of the best preserved ancient temples in turkey dating back thousands of years. You can also enjoy a drink or 2 at the small café/restaurants situated before the entrance to the temple. There a number of small eateries located near the temple good for refreshments and lunch.
About 30 minutes drive will take you to the ancient ruins of Miletus. 40 mins will take you to the ancient ruins of Priene on the slopes of Mount Mycale.
For those of you who want to travel a bit further afield. You can visit Ephesus which is between 1hour to 1 hour 30 minutes from here. This ancient site is the best preserved ancient site in the whole of the Mediterranean region. It's is worth mentioning Turkey has more Greek and Roman sites than Greece and Italy.
You can always head towards Kusadasi and visit the biggest Aqua Park in Europe (Ada Land). For those of you nature lovers about 40 minutes drive will take you to Milli Park near Davutlar (very close to Kusadasi). This is a national park with many protected bays. And great views of greek island of Samos which is less than a mile away across the sea. Milli Park has many animal and plant species. It is a great day to spend a day and swim in many of its beaches with crystal clear waters of the Aegean Sea.
There are too many great restaurants to name which cater for everyone. Whether you want to sample the delicious local Turkish cuisine or you miss home food. Many restaurants and bars can be found close to the apartment. Many of these restaurants also offer a free pick up and drop off taxi service for customers ideal if you want to enjoy drinks and do not wish to drive or walk back late at night. Or you can go to the main resort centre where you will find many fast food places such as Burger King, Mcdonalds, Dominos Pizza etc.
One of our favourite restaurant is Alo 24 this is open 24/7. Fantastic food at great prices. They also do a takeway service. This is situated on the main road to the beach. Just a few minutes walk from our apartment is the Meandros Garden Restaurant. This is another great restaurant. Try the Lamb Tandir (slow cooked in a clay oven) delicious. And than there is Just 4 You again only a few minutes walk from the apartment. Many British expats eat here.
There are many bars to choose from. Many can be found on the beachfront along altinkum main beach and Dolphin Square. For those feeling energetic you can dance the night away at the Medusa Disco Club situated on second beach.
There is a small local shop just 2 minutes walk from here (Turan Market) which caters for your basics needs. You will be surprised what you can find at this small shop. There are 4 large supermarkets 10 minutes driveway, Tansas, Carrefour, Migros and Kipa (Tesco) and many smaller ones.
